Coffee first originated in Guthrie, Oklahoma. A local coffee shop called The Coffee House started serving coffee in the early 1920s. In the 1940s, a man by the name of Mortimer Dyson opened a grocery store in Guthrie and started selling coffee. He also served as the city's first mayor. In 1969, Guthrie became the capital of Oklahoma and Dyson's store was demolished to make way for the new building. In 1990, Starbucksopened its doors in Guthrie and has continued to grow ever since.
Guthrie is a small town in the Oklahoma Panhandle located about 25 miles east of Tulsa on I-40. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. Guthrie is noted for itsetta symbol and Guthrie Oil Field, both of which are located in the town. The Guthrie Oil Field was discovered in 1907 by Wiley Post and James Fenton, two oil millionaires from Dallas, Texas. The field was developed over the next few years by Post and others with help from US$1 million invested by Pemex (now Mexican state oil company Pemex). In 1951, Anglo American Corporation became the first foreign company to invest in Oklahoma's oil industry when it bought a controlling interest in Pemex. Today, Anglo American Corporation operates three major fields in Oklahoma: the Canadian Natural Resources (CNRL) Refinery No. 1 operated by Phillips 66, also known as "Oklahoma City" producing 375 thousand barrels per day; CNRL Refinery No. 2 operated by Valero Energy Services Inc., also known as "West Oklahoman" producing 350 thousand barrels per day; and CNRL Refinery No. 3 operated by Mobil One LLC, also known as "Omaha" producing 270 thousand barrels per day - all of which are within 10 miles of Guthrie proper. In addition to these three main fields there are several smaller ones scattered around the area responsible for about 21% of production for CNRL alone - making it one of Mexico's top five largest energy companies with operations throughout North America (the other four being ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips and Petrobras). The discovery of oil here had a pronounced impact on Guthrie's economy - not just because it helped make Guthrie one of North America's leading crude exporting communities but because it created new jobs both inside and outside the refinery industry itself: maintenance employees at refineries such as CNRL were among those brought up through college or university employment opportunities available here; while truck drivers carrying heavy loads to various sites around town picked up where they left off after learning how to drive an old Chevrolet near Fort Worth OKA during World War II ended hostilities between Japan and America; while many people who found themselves suddenly employed in local industries such as plastics manufacturing or agriculture converted their skills into what would become jobs at local gas stations or petrochemical plants across central Oklahoma... Guthrie was founded in 1907 by Andrew Guthrie, a business man and also the first Mayor of Guthrie. The town was named for Guthrie's grandfather, General James Guthrie. In 1911, Guthrie became the seat of the Cherokee Nation after it was moved from Oklahoma City to the town. The original post office closed in 1951, but mail still arrives to the town today via an old express route that runs through downtown. The city is home to several important businesses and organizations including Tulsa State University and Oklahoma Baptist University. It also has a large population of Native Americans whocontinue to contribute both culturally and economically to the community. One significant development in recent history is the construction of Interstate 35W which now connects Guthrie with Tulsa.
