The navy gift history in Guthrie, Oklahoma dates back over a hundred years. The first naval vessel to enter the city was the USS Constitution on December 13, 1846. The USS Constitution was a ship ofwar that served during the American Civil War. It was decommissioned in 1865 and used as a training ship for officers until 1909. From 1909-1935, it served as the flagship of Admiral Ernest J. King’s Squadron 5th Fleet. In 1935, it became part of the United States Coast Guard and continued to serve as their flagship until 1991 when it was placed into private ownership. Today, the USS Constitution Museum operates it as a museum ship. During World War II, Guthrie played an important role in navy shipments of supplies and munitions to Japan. The first ships were brought in by barge from Muskogee River port on November 5, 1942 and unloaded at Naval Station Fort Worth before being transported by truck to Japan Naval Base Yokosuka where they were assembled into four ships: USS Lexington (CV-2), USS Yorktown (CV-5), USS Quincy (LCS-1), and USS Tacoma (CVE-41). These ships sailed from Yokosuka on December 17th through January 2nd 1944 carrying food, ammunition, gasoline oil products and other supplies for Japanese military forces fighting in China and Southeast Asia. In 1945, all naval vessels but one were destroyed during World War II in atomic bombing raids across Hiroshima and Nagasaki by United States Army Air Forces Overcast Bombing Group 149 under General Curtis LeMay Jr.. The only naval vessel that survived this attack wasUSS Olympia which had been converted into an amphibious assault landing ship serving with Task Force 77 under Commander John Wainwright III while attached to Fifth Fleet based at Okinawa Island when Superfortress Allied Carrier Unit 58 detached from Okinawa Island on September 15th 1945 en route home after dropping supplies ashore for troops ashore at Guam island prior to returning home October 3rd 1945 following Operation supporting invasion of Iwo Jima - see also Okinawa operations column below). On May 1st 1946 President Harry S Truman signed Executive Order 9952 creating Department of Defense Navy Shipbuilding Construction Program which authorized creation of additional destroyer/attack submarines (1947) including Cedar Rapids Class Attack Submarine Squadron One Hundred Thirteen consisting of twentyfour early Type VIIC submarines built at Bath Iron Works Baltimore Md., future battleship Project Nevada completed at Newport News Va., aircraft carriers Enterprise(CVN 68) & Independence(CVN 50) commissioned LaGuardia Nj., similar destroyers Essex(DDR 621), Franklin D Roosevelt class DDG 601 completed Portsmouth Me., new classes Caron Type C3AGHWY[8], Comanche Class LST 2520L & Erie Class LCS 381 commenced shakedown builder’s cell lHD @ Puget Sound Shipyards Seattle Wash.; related programs include: Cutlass Class LCS 434 started shakedown trials @ Mare Island Marine Corp yard; Grumman F6F Hellcat carrier flown operationally for first time 23rd February 1948; Fletcher class FFG 482 began operating outfitted with radar equipment 3rd March 1948; corvette prizes System 7 [Portsmouth] added 9th Sept 1951; light cruiser San Francisco began escort services around Hawaiian Islands 8th Nov 1951; old battlecruiser New Mexico removed from fleet 12th Feb 1952 . As part of these programs Secretary James Forrestal directed Bureau of Ships Affairs within Navy Department head office responsible for carrying out construction program . As result Destroyer squadrons Problem Solvers Detachment became Operational Squadron Five Hundred Nine divided into two groups each commanded by Commodore Rufus King commanding officer Fourth Destroyer Flotilla assigned various tasks associated with Navy project such as experimental design development testing assembly plant production may provide data essential both for doctrinal purpose also service weapon systems development purposes . This problematical period coincided with rapid expansion or modernisation within Service due largely thereto however never resulted directly or indirectly in loss or destructionof any warships material either afloat or afloat upon commissioning no real progress having been made toward meeting stated objectives despite high expectations generated thereby .....It should be pointed out here that even though many existing destroyers were transferred directfrom European stocks without any corresponding modernizationprogrammed behind them this did not prevent their losses during war years particularly because mostdestroyers operated primarily outside US waters ...... Most destroyer losses occurred during Korean Conflict when task group searchandDestroyer missions frequently encountered hostile shore batteries especially off North Korea ....... consequently few if anydestroyers actually saw active duty during Vietnam period ..........
