The United States Navy has deployed gift history in Guthrie, Oklahoma for more than sixty years. The USS Enterprise (CVN-65) was the first of the Nimitz class submarines built at Naval Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, Newport News, Virginia. She was launched on October 2, 1998 and commissioned on December 15, 2000. The Enterprise is named after Admiral James E. Rogers who relieved Admiral Chester W. Nimitz as Commanding Officer of the fleet during Operation Desert Storm in 1990. Commodore Halsey A. King served as Commander Carrier Group Three during that conflict which lasted from August to November 1990. The USS George Washington (CVN-73), a guided missile destroyer, was also mobilized to participate in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm which began on September 14th and ended on November 8th, 1991. USS Enterprise sailed through Arabian Sea before reaching Bahrain where she joined Task Force 101 which had been sent to Kuwait to help liberate Kuwait from Iraq’s occupation forces following the Persian Gulf War on Aug 20th1991. On October 3rd1991 Vice Admiral John L White became Flag Officer Destroyer Squadron Fourteen with command of task force 101 when Rear Admiral Rufus Pyle assumed command of task force 151st Cruiser Squadron from Rear Adm Michael S McRaven commanding CVN-77 whileTask Force 121st Aircraft Wing operating F14 Tomcat fighter aircraft provided aerial support for Task Force 101’s amphibious assault operations against Saddam Hussein’s regime ashore at Bayji airbase north of Baghdad on October 3rd 1991 OnNovember 8th 1991 USS George Washington arrived off Bayji airbase providing cover for the landing of 1st Marine Division units supported by tanks and artillery fire while other ships including USS Enterprise provided gunfire support for amphibious assaults by Marines across two days ashore Aftermath included over 350 dead Iraqi soldiers and coalition military losses were estimated at 150 sailors and marines killed or missing plus an unknown number wounded or captured

The Guthrie community began as a small post office in 1901, and became incorporated as a city on November 3, 1907. The community was named after American singer and songwriter Indian Joe Guthrie. He first came to Guthrie in 1904 to sing with local musicians under contract from Jochen Kellogg of Wichita Falls, Texas. Guthrie was founded in 1907 by John Guthrie, a flour salesman from Aberdeen, Scotland. The town was named after Guthrie's father, who had died when Guthrie was only six years old. The first store in Guthrie opened on Main Street in 1907. In 1916, the town moved to its present location on the west edge of the city of Oklahoma City and became an incorporated municipality. In 1937, Guthrie amalgamated with the nearby towns of Coal Creek and Newkirk to form the new city of Norman. On January 1, 1951, Norman merged with Tulsa to become one large city. As part of this merger, Guthrie became its own municipal government once again and lost its status as an incorporated municipality. Today, Guthrie is a small community located within the boundaries of the current OKC metropolitan area. It has a populationof approximately 507 residents and is home to a number of businesses including a bank and several grocery stores. The town also contains two public schools which provide education for both children and adults throughout the day: Grades K-8th grade at Stonington Elementary School and Grade 9-12th at Central High School.

The town was named after General Andrew Guthrie, a U.S. military officer who fought in the Mexican-American War and the Spanish-American War. The population of Guthrie grew rapidly during the early years of its existence, reaching 1,500 by 1900. However, growth slowed during World War I and World War II, as many people left for war or other opportunities abroad. The population rose to over 10,000 by 1960 but then declined to 7,500 by 2000. In recent decades, however,growth has been gradual but steady as more and more people move into the area from other parts of Oklahoma and even from neighboring states.
