Guthrie is a small town located in southeastern Oklahoma. The population was 5,564 at the 2000 census. Guthrie is the county seat of Haskell County. The first phase included plans for a new downtown area containing office buildings and residences; however these plans were never fully realized due to financial difficulties experienced by the city during that period. Guthrie was founded in 1907 by John Guthrie and his wife, Fannie. The Guthries were early pioneers in the Oklahoma Territory and Huston County. In 1916, the Guthrie family sold their business to J.D. Cray for $10,000. Cray became the first postmaster in Guthrie and started a mail order business from his home. In 1922, he built the first school in Guthrie and named it after his father-in-law, James Witherspoon Gilbert. It was built on a lot donated by Mr. Gilbert and is still in use today as the main gymnasium at Guthrie High School. In 1951, when its population reached 20,000 people, Guthrie became an city of its own with its own government and police department. The city grew rapidly due to heavy industry which continued until 1971 when all manufacturing stopped due to economic recession across America.
