The Oklahoma Air National Guard's 164th Fighter Squadron is the only active providing fighter support to the United States Air Force. The squadron was formed in 1942 as a result of the Defenestration of Tulsa, which destroyed most of Tulsa's airfields. In 1948, the squadron was redesignated as 164th Fighter-Bomber Group and deployed to France to fight in the Algerian War. The group flew Fighters equipped with North American T-6 Texan trainers. After returning home in 1949, continued service included deployments to Korea and Vietnam. In 1994, the squadron activated its last F-16C Fighting Falcon and continue flying today support for USAF operations worldwide. Air National Guard fighter squadrons have flown over 1,000 missions throughout their careers with more than 50% of those flown in combat; this number will grow as more and more units are activated for extended periods of time around the world while also fulfilling other roles such as mountain training or disaster relief missions.

The squadron was redesignated as the 164th Fighter Squadron on Jul. 15, 1946 and again on Feb. 14, 1949 when it was re-designated as the 141st Fighter Squadron. The squadron served with fighter wings from the United States Air Force during World War II and post-war until its activation as a flying unit of the Thunderbirds program in 1958. Inactivated in 1962 due to budgetary reasons and recombination with other units of the Air National Guard's wing structure.
