The Naval Academy has been in operation since 1907 and is one of the most prestigious military academies in the United States. The Saratoga was an American World War II destroyer that served as flagship of Destroyer Squadron 22. She was decommissioned in 1960 and donated to the Glenpool Historical Society. The Enterprise was a United States Navy shipthat served as flagship of Destroyer Squadron 6 during World War II. She was decommissioned in 1945 and scrapped in 1957.
Glenpool is a town in Payne County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,621 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Payne County by population. Glenpool is located on the eastern edge of the Navajo Nation and is bordered by Haskell to the north, Haskell City to the east, Indianola to the south and west, and Tecumseh to the northwest. The first settlers in Glenpool were three men from Illinois – John Ladd, James Robertson and David Wigglesworth – who came overland from St. Louis in 1872. They built a log cabin on what is now State Road 20 near present-day Glenpool High School. The Ladds also raised chickens and pigs for their own use until they sold their farm in 1874 to George Sutherlin. In 1875, Jens Christensen took up land adjacent to his brother Lars’ farm on what became State Road 24 near present-day Indianola; he named his tract of land Glenpool after his home state of Minnesota (then part of Dakota Territory). A post office was established at Glenpool in 1877, and mail was delivered there until 1912 when it was moved to Haskell City. In 1907, Glenn Pool Improvement Company was organized with a $5,- per capita tax campaign as part of a larger effort by local citizens to improve public transportation within the town limits. That same year saw construction begin on what would becomeglen pool's first schoolhouse: One classroom building (#2) stood tall until 1922 when it burnt down; subsequent construction added six classrooms/laborspaces (#4-8), two auditoriums ( #10-12), an kitchen ( #14), an Amish barn ([#16]) which served as storage for equipment used in teaching music theory classes during lunchtime (& preened!), four basketball courts (.9 m x .9 m @ 0 degrees C each), one football field (.7 m x .7 m @ 25 degrees C each)and one hockey rink (.3 m x .3 m @ -20 degrees C). It wasn't until 1935 that Glenpool had its belvedere tower! The following year saw completion of "Glen Pool" Elementary School which seated 206 students inside and 38 students outside with space for expansion into morerooms if necessary; this structure remains today as "Glen Pool Middle/High School". On November 30th 1939 Glenda Beales became Miss America 1938 & Mrs USA 1940 after winning 3rd place at her pageant held at Shea's Rodeo Hotel across from Globe Life Arena where she entertained dignitaries including President Franklin D Roosevelt & Ambassador Joseph Kennedy Jr., among others! Glenpool is a small town in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 576 at the 2000 census. It has been since shrunk to 462 as the result of the nearby towns of Glenpool and Maple Valley amalgamating. The first people in what is now Glenpool were Native Americans who hunted game and gathered plants and berries on the Creek Nation until 1827 when they ceded their land to the United States government in a treaty. The town was platted by J. H. McKenzie in 1879, and named for John Gwynnwood, an early settler who bought land here from David Bogue in 1881. The community grew rapidly during the late 1800s due to its location at one of three crossings of the Arkansas River that linked Indian Territory with Texas (the other two being Edmondson and Liberal). In 1907, construction began on what would become Glenpool Stadium which seated 10,000 spectators for baseball games played there through 1951. In 1902, local ranchers formed a cooperative to raise cattle on four thousand acres northeast of town; this operation became known as "The Ranch" and remains an important part of Glenpool history today. In 1924-25, Glenn Pool had its first referendum on annexation into Haskell County; it passed with 96% support but only lasted six months because many residents objected to having their county set up like Oklahoma City did with its numerous subdivisions. By 1930, most businesses had closed down due to competition from larger cities in Oklahoma City or Tulsa; however, some continued operations such as A&P grocery store that still occupies space today across from US 60 off Elm Street near High School Lane. During World War II, much of what is now Glenpool was used as an airbase by RAF Bomber Command because it was close to where Japanese planes were gathering resources for bombing raids against American targets inside America mainland; however much of this area has been destroyed by development over time including both homes built here during wartime times and even an airport wing currently used by ATV operators!Glenpool also saw extensive use after 9/11 when federal law required all airports within reach be searched for banned items such as explosives before they could be seized!
