Enid is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 27,541 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskogee County. The name of the city comes from an Indian word meaning "place where there are many trees." The first people to inhabit Enid were the Wichita and Pawnee Indians. They used to live near the Arkansas River on what is now called Park Boulevard. In 1854, Enid was founded by Major John Fenton as part of a settlement around Fort Reno on the Arkansas River. The town was named for Mrs. Enid Webster who donated land for it. In 1911, President Taft ordered all cities in Oklahoma be consolidated into one municipality under his jurisdiction and renamed it Muskogee City. However, this order was revoked by Governor White and re-issued as Order No. 1411 which named Tulsa as the new municipal center for all of Oklahoma City/Muskogee County area east of I-40 (including downtown Tulsa). The merger caused some resentment among citizens of Enid who felt they had been left out in the merger process while their counterparts in Tulsa received preferential treatment. In 1943, local businessmen formed a group to promote development around what would eventually become downtown Enid with the goal of increasing jobs and bringing more traffic to town during World War II when production increased due to wartime shortages elsewhere in America. Enid is a town in Rogers County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,491 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1907 as a small community east of Tulsa. The name "Enid" comes from the Scottish/British place Enniskillen on the Firth of Clyde. In 1911, the city became an independent municipality and changed its name to Enid after former Ennis Mayor Lillian Geddes Ennis visited the city for a day to see how it had developed. The first school in town opened in 1907 with 33 students. In 1909, the first post office opened and remained open until 1951. By 1912, there were three churches in town- Methodist, Baptist and Presbyterian- all affiliated with each other through interdenominational prayer meetings or synods. A high school was built in 1915 and remains operational today as Rogers High School; it replaced an earlier school that burned down in 1906. Businesses started popping up soon after incorporation so that by 1918 there were 11 businesses including two banks (the First National Bank of Tulsa and Peoples Trust & Banking Company) with 189 employees total living within one mile of downtown Enid proper; this number increased to 25 by 1922 when business began booming due to new transportation opportunities brought about by World War I and later prohibition efforts The 1920s saw dramatic growth for Enid due largely to oil exploration activity taking place nearby on what is now known as Red River shale beds which yielded large quantities of oil but also produced considerable environmental damage including water shortages caused by surging rivers which overflowed their banks In 1932–1933, local resident Harry Wolkiewicz organized a drive called "Pioneering Mothers' Day" which aimed to promote enfranchisement for women residents of Oklahoma Territory; this drive led eventually to passage of state law granting voting rights to women nationwide on November 3rd 1933 During World War II (1939–1945), much emphasis was placed on production capacities at military bases throughout Oklahoma specifically at McAlester Army Air Field where over 2 million gallons (7000 m3) of gasoline were processed daily using this unconventional fuel source ; however during 1942 some residents began protesting these military operations leading ultimatelyto public demonstrationswhich ended abruptly with tear gas being fired into the air . Enid is a small town located in County Clare, Oklahoma. It was founded on December 12, 1907 by Enid Hardware and Manufacturing Company president Harry D. Smith. The first store was built on the north side of the intersection of Main Street and Deer Creek Road. The company operated out of a large building at this location until 1915 when it moved to its present location on Elm Street. The town rapidly grew during the 1920s and 1930s as businesses became established and new residents relocated to the area from other parts of Oklahoma City. By 1936, Enid had over 100 residents and two movie theaters were in operation. In 1938, Enid was incorporated as a city under the name of "Enid, OK." In 1941, World War II began and the town experienced significant growth as citizens donated their time and resources to help war efforts. By 1945, Enid had reached its peak population with over 1,500 residents; however, due to post-war economic instability, enrollment declined precipitously in the ensuing years. In 1961, following passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which outlawed discrimination against African Americans in Oklahoma City's business districts, Mayor John Henson issued an ordinance establishing segregation within public accommodations based upon race; this ordinance remains in effect today. In 1971–72, following an outbreak of lead poisoning that afflicted several children living in Enid proper (and adjacent towns), Mayor Henson enacted legislation creating aPublic Health Advisory Board to investigate potential causes and solutions for lead poisoning in children statewide; this board continues to exist today as part of Tulsa Regional Health District's health care services program.]
