The name Enid may be derived from the Choctaw word "en-i-dah" meaning "place where water flows." In 1907, the town was platted and named for Enid Blythe Wright, wife of American business man Arthur P. Wright. The first post office in Enid was established on November 20, 1907. The name of the townchanged to Enid on December 5th of that year after Mrs. Wright's husband received a patent for the town site from Secretary of War Newton Bakeries. According to one source: "In 1907 when Enid was platted it was spelled 'Enie'. Mrs. Arthur Pwright deed title to lot 24 in 1906 which made it possible for them to change their spelling." Mrs Wright's husband had also received a patent for land east of town on what is now First Street and north on 2nd Street which became known as 'Wright Place'. Businessman Arthur Pwright bought 640 acres (253 hectares) east of town in 1908 and started developing it into an agricultural center with large stores, homes and barns used by his farmers and ranchers who grew crops such as corn, beans and soybeans; cattle; horses; hogs; wheat; oats; potatoes; cottonseed oil;; cigarettes;; breadfruit;; bananas;; eggs;; coffee." By 1912 most of those activities were moved away from downtown due to increasing development around Interstate 40 which then replaced US 66 as main commercial artery in this region". Today there are still some small businesses scattered throughout downtown but much has changed sinceArthur Pwright developed this area over many years ago including increased traffic congestion caused by I-40 Expansion Project project completed in 2009
