The city's growth continued through World War II as more people moved into area during wartime efforts to build materials for war production. Postwar growth slowed until the late 1950s when construction began on downtown development which included several high-rise buildings and a shopping center now known as Northgate Mall. The mall reached its peak popularity in the early 1980s with many tenants including Sears, Kmart, and JCPenney; however, it closed down in 1984 due to economic recession. In recent years much redevelopment has occurred around downtown; most notably Inwood Place which fronts onto Interstate 24 and includes several large office buildings as well as luxury housing developments such as Inwood Place Villas & Condos; however there has been some opposition from residents over plans for increased traffic and density within walking distance of downtown core retail businesses while failing to provide any benefits for residents other than higher parking rates. Today Enid is one of OKC's fastest growing neighborhoods with an evolving skyline full of mixed use buildings and parks - making it one of Tulsa's most vibrant neighborhoods."

The city's nickname is "the City of Enchantment". The first mention of Enid can be found in the 1885 census when it was listed as an unincorporated community located east of present-day Muskogee. In 1907, it merged with neighboring Ada to form a new city. That same year, the first brick building for the chamber of commerce was built on Wabasha Avenue across from what would later become downtown Enid. By 1930, enrollment at local schools had increased to over 2,000 students and businesses had been organized into five groups: banks (First National Bank and Trust Company), churches (Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church and First Presbyterian Church), real estate agents (Draper & Sons Realtors), educators (Oklahoma State Normal School for Teachers) andDoctors Without Borders Medical Relief Corps unit ( Doctors Without Borders Medical Relief Corps Unit #1). In 1941 during World War II, Enid became headquarters for Military Intelligence Command Southeast Region which oversaw operations throughout Ira Lou Hargrave Army Airfield near Tulsa as well as research stations at Tuskegee University and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company facility west of Tulsa. On October 1st that year following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor; War Cabinet order number 4375 established Military Intelligence Command Southeast Region Headquarters within the newly created Department of War Information Services under Supreme Commander Ulysses S. Grant which included HQs for all Arms Control Mission commands including Japanese Activities in the Pacific Area commanded by Lieutenant General James L. McIntyre Jr.. This made Enid home to America’s first military intelligence agency after World War II with responsibility for covering Japan’s activities throughout Asia/Pacific area including Manchuria/China proper as well as numerous islands in East Asia including Okinawa Prefecture where American troops were garrisoned until 1945 On February 15th 1949 President Harry Truman signed Executive Order 9066 which dissolved all overseas military installations within our borders thereby dissolving both Military Intelligence Command Southeast Region Headquarters along with any associated command or control facilities worldwide
