Enid is a small town in eastern Oklahoma, located on the east side of the Arkansas River. The town was founded in 1907 by Enid residents John and Belle Allred. It became an incorporated city in 1928. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 3,569. The Allreds were pioneers in this area and are considered to be the first white people to live permanently in that part of present-day Oklahoma. They came from Illinois and started a family here in 1907. In 1928, they moved to Fort Worth, Texas to become wealthy bankers there. The city of Enid was founded on their land near what is now Interstate 40 just south of downtown Enid. The Allreds donated most of their lands for development as a community with schools and other public facilities; however, some portions remain open for agricultural use today (see map below). Their philanthropy has helped make Enid one of the most diverse communities in Oklahoma City metropolitan area, with more than 120 different homes and businesses within its borders!
Enid was a small town in Oklahoma, located near the confluence of the Arkansas and Canadian Rivers. The post office at Enid was established on October 15, 1894, and remained in operation until it closed on July 1, 1951. The first settlers in what is now Enid were white people who came overland from Kansas in 1879. They prospected forinction land around the forks of the Canadian River and founded two Indian reservations: White Cloud and Sand Creek. In 1881, they organized a town to serve as their county seat. The first postmaster at Enid was Hiram Sabin; he held that position until his retirement on May 12, 1911. In 1907, Enid became one of the original fifty-eight townships within Oklahoma Territory. On January 3, 1907, its charter was amended to allow for a school district to be created; this District School Board later merged with the Tulsa district to form the present-day Tulsa County Schools system. In 1912-13, construction began on what is now Rockefeller Center in downtown Tulsa; this project was financed by an act of Congress known as the “Rockefeller Act” because President John D. Rockefeller had contributed $5 million towards its construction
