Elk City, Oklahoma is a city in Pushmataha County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 3,552 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pushmataha County. Elk City is located on the east side of the Arkansas River and is bordered by the town of McAlester to its south and north, and Prineville to its east. The first permanent settlers in what became Elk City were prospectors who discovered gold nuggets near present-day Elk City in 1868. By 1875, over 100 families had moved into what would become Elk City from all over eastern Oklahoma Territory. In 1880, an agreement was made with McAlester for the two communities to share a government; McAlester would provide financial support while residents voted on issues such as taxation and public improvements. The first school in what would become Elk City was built in 1886 on land donated by George Hodge (1851-1910). A second school was built in 1888 on property donations from John Bancroft (1862-1920) and others. The town's first courthouse was built between 1890 and 1893 by J.P. Farrell (1857-1922). The building still stands today as a museum dedicated to local history and culture. In 1907, construction began on what would become Park Avenue which connected downtown Elmira with new housing developments to the north and west across the river where Park Avenue now meets Interstate 40W/Upper Arkansas Road (). Today much of that original development remains including Elmira's old downtown core which has been preserved as a renovated district known as Old Elmira Renaissance District Incorporated since 1997 (). In 1911, Wichita cottonseed farmer Harry Fenton opened his own seed business along Park Avenue; this led to increased demand for food products grown in eastern Oklahoma Territory which required more acreage for production than available within Pushmataha County until railroads arrived to take advantage of new markets (). In 1925 Elkhart resident Wm Epps organized Collier Oil & Gas Co., Ltd., one of Tulsa’s earliest commercial oil ventures (), becoming its first president () before selling it three years later to Republic Petroleum Corporation (); this company later merged with Texaco Incorporated () forming ChevronTexaco Plc(). Elk City experienced rapid growth during World War II due largely to heavy demand for materials shipped out from Tulsa due to war efforts (); there were also numerous military installations located within or around town including installation number 4 at Fort Sill (), an ammunition depot used primarily for artillery training (). After Pearl Harbor when hostilities stopped most manufacturing activity ceased but some businesses continued through 1945 such as Big Sur Garment Co.; these operations ultimately closed after American forces liberated Kuwait from British rule in September 1990 ().
