El Reno is a city in Oklahoma, United States. The population was 24,562 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Harper County. The city is located on the El Reno River and has a total area of 21 square miles (59 km2). The history of El Reno begins with the arrival of French traders in 1836. William C. Durant and his brother-in-law, Elijah Couch, founded the town on November 1, 1837 while traveling downriver from Fort Gibson to trade goods with the Kiowa and Comanche Indians. They named their new settlement after Maurice Rensselaer Fontenelle, an American trader who had been active in Central America during the 1830s and 1840s and had introduced cotton to Mexico City. In 1846, when Indian Removal began for all Native Americans living east of Texas Trail 35 near present-day Tulsa, many residents of El Reno decided to move westward into what would become Oklahoma Territory under US Department of Interior auspices known as Indian removal policies. In fact, by 1850 nearly all adults in El Reno were either gone or had relocated away from their homes to join other settlers in what would become Harper County. The first Post Office was established at El Reno on December 15, 1851; it served as the town's only building until 1865 when a new post office was constructed next door at Haskell House (later renamed Durant House), which still stands today as a historic landmark withinEl Reno limits. By 1860 there were over 100 buildings in downtown El Reno including several churches—the Methodist Episcopal Church built its first sanctuary here in 1861 followed by First Baptist Church (1862) and then Presbyterianism’s First Presbyterian Church (1864). A cotton gin existed before 1870 but ceased operations due to railroad competition; however local mills continued production until 1903 when they closed because of lack of demand for raw cotton products flowing out into eastern Oklahoma City via Harvey Field Railroad Company line running through town center looping back onto itself about 3 miles south near modern day Elmwood Cemetery & Community Park just north of I-40 exit 191B/I-435 exit 16A/US 71 exit 5C/9th St NE intersection; see map below: see also https://www3millertmlp3d4eo5a5gfvh1i1a1d4lc099edc90iz4/. El Reno, Oklahoma was founded in 1907 by James S. El Reno and his brother-in-law, A.W. Franks. The town developed slowly due to the lack of a railroad connection and the difficulty of getting goods to market. In 1928, the El Reno National Bank was formed and began offering banking services to residents. In 1930, the first high school in town was built and in 1932, the first post office opened. In 1937, construction began on the current courthouse which became operational that year. The town continued to grow rapidly with new businesses being established including a grocery store, insurance company, restaurant, hardware store and more. In 1948, El Reno decided to become an independent city and adopted a new city charter which declared it an "open community". The city grew quickly with many new buildings being constructed such as a library and fire hall. In 1960, El Reno annexed nearby Jenks which greatly increased its population size but caused some problems because both towns had different government structures which conflicted with each other's interests. Eventually these issues were resolved through negotiations and legal challenges until both cities felt they were operating under one government structure for all purposes within their borders (i.e.,Jenks is considered part of El Reno). The current mayor of El Reno is Harry Henson who took office on January 1st of this year
El Reno was founded by theold French fur trader, Antoine de la Motte, on May 1, 1827. La Motte named the town after his father and namesake, Henri-Jacques La Motte. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources and trade with Mexico City. In 1868, El Reno became a county seat of Washita County and later that year it annexed the towns of Round Rock (founded in 1865) and New Madrid (founded in 1870). In 1901, El Reno joined Washita County as a full county. The construction of Interstate 40 through the area in the early 1990s led to a significant population growth for El Reno. Today, El Reno is one of Oklahoma's fastest growing cities and has become an important center for commerce and education within the region.
