The horse had been used by the sheriff of Muskogee County at one point prior to its donation to El Reno. In 1907, another gentleman donated a new wagon and four horses to the city for use as police vehicles. On October 6, 1912, two patrol officers were hired from Tulsa when it became apparent that El Reno was not going to be able to find suitable officers to fill all of its needs due to World War I; these two officers served until 1922 when they were replaced by Captains Lyle Henson and Clarence Ahern respectively. On November 15th, 1920, Captain Ahern gifted his old horse saddle along with three holsters belonging thereto (one original) to First Sgt John Jansen who had been killed in action during World War I while serving with Company E 2nd Tulsa Infantry Regiment at Belleau Wood Plantation near Paris, France. Mrs. Jansen also received a sword from Captain Ahern which she still uses today as part of her decorum cruiser outfit duties aboard her husband's law enforcement vessel "Polk" (N/A). It is interesting that this particular item has remained with the family since Captain Ahern's death in 1922; it is not currently available for purchase or rental anywhere withinEl Reno! In 1954 Sergeant William Kapp transferred from Tulsa Police Department - now Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation - and became our first African American officer in El Reno! When he joined us we already had an excellent diversity program in place including social clubs for black citizens and their children; however we did not have any police dogs! Sergeant Kapp started out training our current police dog "Buddy" which currently serves as our department's mascot! Buddy was originally bred by Burt Reynolds' character Lt Joe Riddle on his short lived TV series "Rawhide" back in 1969! After meeting Buddy during his initial training sessions Sgt Kapp decided that he would make great addition onto our force!

El Reno is a small town in central Oklahoma that was founded in 1907. The name likely comes from the Chichi language word "eroona" meaning "end." The town was part of the Cherokee Nation until it was forced to cede its land to the United States in 1887.
