El Reno is a city in Payne County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 57 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1907 by German-Canadian immigrants and became an American town after the end of World War I. The city is named for General George Armstrong Custer, who fought in the Indian Wars and also served as commanding general of the First Infantry Division during World War II. The first settlers to El Reno were German immigrants who arrived from Manitoba in 1881. They built a log cabin on what is now Elm Street and organized a company to look for land east of present day Canadian River Avenue. In 1907, they purchased 640 acres (253 hectares) southeast of present day El Reno from John McCoy and his brother Jameson McCoy for $1,000 cash. They named their new settlement El Reno after General George Armstrong Custer, who had fought in the Indian Wars and been awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at Little Bighorn Creek. The early years were difficult for El Reno as it competed with other towns for business space and jobs during prohibition era America. However, over time its citizens developed a strong community spirit that helped it overcome challenges head on including annexation by Wichita Falls in 1925; economic hard times during World War II; and growth following the discovery of oil fields near Elk City in 1945-46. After more than 50 years as an agricultural center surrounded by ranching country, El Reno experienced rapid growth when petroleum resources were discovered nearby in 1973-74 followed by increased development due to high gas prices caused by OPEC embargo created by U.S.-Soviet Mutual Economic Assistance Agreement (MEA). In recent years many businesses have closed or relocated within town limits while others have opened up shop outside town limits becoming one of Oklahoma's fastest growing cities with over 1 million residents within its boundaries today El Reno has hosted numerous events such as world championships track & field events (2006); rodeo (1960s through 2000s),Oklahoma state fairs (1940s through 1990s), US Open tennis tournaments (1978-, 2006-, 2008-, 2013-) most recently held between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer which drew almost 20,000 spectators; NCAA college basketball championships games between Wichita State Wildcats/Kansas Jayhawks & Baylor Bears from 2007-2015; Tulsa tornado outbreak response exercise which took place on April 15th 2014
