El Reno is a city in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 15,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa–Ft. Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1889 by James Wickersham and his family as a small community on the Arkansas River near its junction with the Canadian River. Wickersham named it after his home state of Nevada, which he had visited while attending college at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. In 1907, El Reno became an incorporated town under the name of "El Reno." In 1912, it changed its name to "Reno" after then-Governor David Boren (D-Oklahoma City). The city's first post office opened in 1913. In 1914, it annexed the towns of Ada and Levelland to become one municipality; this annexation was challenged but ratified by a local referendum. On November 3, 1915, Reno became one of several American cities that were bombed by World War I Austrian airforce pilots flying under Operation Anaconda; all but two buildings within its limits were destroyed or damaged beyond repair. After World War I ended and America entered into a new era characterized by technological advances and aggressive economic growth throughout much of Europe and Japan (the Roaring Twenties), El Reno began to prosper as an industrial center due to its location between Tulsa and Fort Smith—then two major regional centers for commerce and industry. Industries included Manufacturing Company No 2 (now known as Kaiser Aluminum), Rubber Products Inc., Eastern Pipe & Pipeline Co., Construction Equipment Corp., Cement Manufacturers Association (CMA), Paints n' Scents Inc., Air conditioners etc.—all major players in regional trade during this time period. A large number of residents who had made their homes here during these years now moved away when those industries declined or collapsed in the early 21st century as did many other Midwestern communities during this time period caused by technological displacement from overseas production sources coupled with reductions in available open space for development following

El Reno is a small town in the U.S. state of Oklahoma, located on the El Reno River. The name originated from the Cheyenne word "erane," meaning "place where buffalo range." The town was founded by pioneers in 1881, and named after Fort Reno, which was built in 1868 to protect settlers along the river. In 1907, El Reno became an incorporated municipality. As of the 2010 census, its population was 954 people. The first white settlers to arrive in what is now El Reno were men led by Captain John Sitton and Joseph Hines who landed on July 8th, 1881 about 10 miles east of present day El Reno on a raft called "The Belle Isle." They named their new settlement after Fort Lyon (now Washita) which had been established in 1867 as part of a land grant to Major General Reynolds Byers. At first there were few residents because most of the land was still under cultivation by Native American nations such as the Kiowa and Comanche tribes who managed it for their own subsistence purposes only. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the banks of the Arkansas River, which made it a major transportation hub for goods arriving from eastern Oklahoma and western Texas. The townsite was surveyed in 1883, and construction began on the first structure in what would become El Reno – a two-story wooden frame building known as the Armory. The town quickly became an important community withinOklahoma, hosting various cultural events and serving as a transportation hub for goods moving between eastern Oklahoma and western Texas. In 1902, El Reno merged with nearby Haskell City to form one large municipality.
