This is primarily due to the fact that coffee has been one of the mainstay industries in Edmond for years. The first coffee beans were planted in 1907 in what is now downtown Edmond. At that time, there were just a few houses and no businesses around. The first coffee shop was opened by J.C. Nichols and his wife Viola on Saginaw Street. For many years, this was the only business in town and it served as a social gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. In 1960, an early investor purchased the business from J.C. Nichols and renamed it Starbucks Coffee Company Ltd., followed by another investment group buying it from Starbucks Coffee Company Ltd. In 1984, Starbucks closed its doors for good after unsuccessful attempts to compete with local cafes such as Bulldog Cafe & Grill and Donut Shop on Elm Street which had already started up during that time period (see below). However, despite their closure, some of Starbucks’ legacy remain today including their popular Pumpkin Spice Latte which has been enjoyed by customers all over the world since its inception back in 1984!
