Edmond, Oklahoma is a city located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census and is expected to grow to 2,048 by 2050. The city was founded by settlers in 1892 as Fort Washita and named for Edmund Rice, an early settler and mayor of Topeka, Kansas. It became an incorporated town in 1907. The first families to arrive in Edmond were farmers from Illinois who established a farmstead on the banks of the Arkansas River near what is now downtown Edmond. The name “Edmond” was given to them by General Andrew Jackson during his visit to their land on July 3, 1892. Over time, other pioneers arrived and many businesses were started in this nascent town including a hotel (1907), store (1911), bakery (1914), movie theater (1920), post office (1920-1966) and agricultural center (1930). In 1930, Edmond annexed part of Tulsa City limits creating what is now known as northeast Tulsa County while still retaining its own government with a Mayor/Council system similar to that found in Wichita Falls, Texas which had preceded it there by about two years. In 1937-38 gasoline rationing caused several businesses closed; however local residents remained active in restarting some of these operations after hours when needed or when supplies ran out locally or from neighboring towns statewide during those times of tight fuel rationing then common across much of America during World War II due largely to Nazi Germany's aggressive weapons development program which included building up NRG plants all over the United States production line
