Edmond was named after General Edmund Johnson, who fought in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. The city was founded on December 3, 1907 by J.D. Edwards and his brother, Ike Edwards. It initially consisted of a small townsite surrounded by farmlands. In 1907, Edmond’s population totaled just over 100 people. By 1912, the city had grown to nearly 1,000 residents and it soon became one of Oklahoma’s leading agricultural centers. In 1916, the city council designated Edmond an incorporated municipality with a mayor and five trustees responsible for its affairs. The post-World War II years were particularly prosperous for Edmond as its economy boomed thanks to growing farming yields and increased demand for goods exported to Mexico and other Latin American countries. However, during this time period there were also some negative developments that led to significant changes in the community: first, 1955 saw what has been called “the most devastating tornado outbreak in local history” that destroyed many homes and businesses; second, 1969 saw a series of race riots that left at least 38 people dead; third, 1980 saw a major fire which burned down over 60 buildings in downtown Edmond; fourth, 1990 marked the beginning of what would be known as “the dotcom boom” when many new companies started up in downtown Edmond; finally, 2000 marked the end of what would be known as the “dotcom boom” when all but two of those companies went out of business within three years. Despite these challenges and some tough times (eighth grade students at nearby Tinker High School are currently writing about their experiences during these years), much has changed since then in bothEdmondsensityand economic vitality including several recent courthouse construction projects completed or under way throughout the city including: renovation/updates to old City Hall (2000); addition/ renovation/updates to Tulsa County Courthouse Annex (2009); expansion/renovation/updates to Municipal Court Building (2009).
