Edmond, Oklahoma is home to the Air Force Base Area School District. The base has been in operation since 1947 and has a population of over 16,000 people. The AFB is where the Air Force's primary Gift History Collection is located. The AFB gift history collection began in 1947 when the USAF purchased land adjacent to the base for $1 million. This was the first large-scale donation by an American military force to a public school district inOklahoma. The influx of new people during World War II led to increased development within Edmond limits including construction of roadways and buildings such as police stations and warehouses which continue to be used today by businesses and residents alike. After World War II, many business owners decided to move away from downtown Edmond towards larger metropolitan areas such as Tulsa or Oklahoma City due to dwindling populations within those cities while still others chose not to expand their businesses into adjacent rural areas due to difficult access or lack thereof available land
