In 1898, the city of Durant founded the Naval Militia and began acquiring surplus Navy vessels. Over time, Durant became known as the “Navy Capital of America” and started developing its own naval facilities. By 1966, the city had acquired 3 warships- two destroyers and one submarine- and began using them for harbor patrols and training exercises. The navy also constructed an auxiliary Landing Ship Dock (LHD) in downtown Durant in 1978 which facilitated cargo shipping from Tulsa Bayou. In 2003, the navy opened a new facility called Wohlgemuth Maritime Park which houses 2 amphibious assault boats, 4 jet skis, 5 patrol boats, 1 mine sweeper/laser gunboat, 1 Harbor Patrol boat, 1 Coast Guard station and 1 helicopter hangar. In 2006, the city of Durant erected a $32 million pier that facilitates military transportation into town for dockyard operations and other activities related to shipbuilding at Wohlgemuth Maritime Park. This project is part of a larger plan to redevelop downtown Durant into an economic center with multiple multimillion dollar projects underway including an urban waterfront park that will include a marina and luxury apartments overlooking downtown; a new baseball stadium; a convention center;and office buildings on top of existing warehouses or industrial sites within walking distance of each other.

In 1984 Durant moved to Seattle and became a free agent and signed with the Thunder. He helped lead the Thunder to their third championship in four years in 2002–2003 before retiring at age 34. Durant is now a special assistant coach with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
