The National Guard in Duncan, Oklahoma has a long and varied history. The first national guard unit was organized on November 5, 1907 by the Duncan Chamber of Commerce. The unit was called the "Duncan Guards." The first official mission of the Duncan Guards was to keep order during a prohibition party at the local soda fountain. The guards lasted only two months before being disbanded because of low volunteer turnout. In 1912, another national guard unit was organized in Duncan under the name the "Duncan Rangers." This unit served for three years before disbanding because there were not enough volunteers to fill its ranks. In 1921, a new national guard unit was created in Duncan under the name "the Territorial Army." This unit served until 1969 when it was dissolved due to budget cuts. Since 1969, all active duty troops serving in Duncan have been part of the Oklahoma National Guard. Unit sizes have fluctuated over time but have generally remained around 100 plus soldiers. The current incarnation of the Duncan National Guard consists of 3 battalions: battalion A (adult male units), battalion B (junior male units), and battalion C (elementary school age children). Each battalion has an initial strength of around 100 soldiers and can be augmented by up to 25 soldiers through enlistment into other battalions or as needed through reinforcements from other agencies or states.

The Oklahoma National Guard was organized on February 15, 1907 by the State of Oklahoma as a branch of the National Guard of the United States. The first unit to be activated was Company C, 2nd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment. On July 1, 1907, Company D, 3rd Battalion 9th Infantry Regiment became part of the brigade and battalion headquarters were moved to McAlester City from Duncan.
On November 8, 1912 the brigade and battalion headquarters were again moved when it was reorganized as an infantry regiment under command of Major General John B. Frémont with Companies A and B in McAlester City while there was also a company in Durant formed from Headquarters and Headquarters Battery (Citizens’ Volunteer Artillery) which had been detached from Cavalry Squadron Fourteenth Cavalry Regiment on October 26, 1912.
The brigade disbanded on August 12, 1916 when it was redesignated as an infantry regiment once again under Major General John B. Frémont with Companies A and B in McAlester City while there was also a company in Durant formed from Headquarters Battery (Citizens’ Volunteer Artillery) which had been detached from Cavalry Squadron Fourteenth Cavalry Regiment on October 26, 1916 but this time at Fort Sill instead of McAlester City where it served until relieved by battery organic elements that arrived at Fort Sill on December 5th.
In 1922-1923 Brigade HQs were located at Lawton (later Fort Worth), Guthrie (later Tulsa),and Wagon Wheel Army Airfield before returning to McAlester City for another year after which they moved back to Guthrie permanently.
On January 1st 1924 the brigade became an artillery regiment once again under Major General John B. Frémont with Companies A&B being renamed Regimental Artillery companies
In 1933-1934 Brigade HQs were located at Weatherford Army Airfield before moving back to McAlester City permanently.
On May 1st 1936 Brigade HQs returned to Weatherford Army Airfield permanently

The oil production began in Duncan in the early 1920s and it has continued to be an important part of the town's economy ever since. In 2010, Duncan was recognized as one of the "Most Interesting Towns in America" by TownID magazine.
The National Guard is a United States military reserve that consists of nearly one million men and women who can be called to service in time of national emergency. The National Guard has been present in the United States since 1790, when revolutionary patriots formed a nucleus of volunteer militia to resist British occupation. By the end of the 1800s, there were over 20,000 Guardsmen serving in all branches of the U.S. military. In 1954, President Eisenhower established the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) for Guardsmen as a way to prepare them for careers in the civilian world. In 1976, Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which authorized members of the Army Reserve and Marines reserves to serve in state militias while on duty in states with local governments that did not recognize or support The United States Armed Forces. This law also provided recognition and funding to state militias through an annual appropriation process known as “the Soldier’s Share”. Since its inception, NGV has played an important role within American society by providing individuals with necessary skills and training for both home defense and deployments abroad. As part of NDAA activation/reactivation authority granted under Section 101(a) of Title 10U., NGV is directed by DOD commanders during wartime events “to provide short-term security forces such as armed guards at selected installations where necessary to protect federal property from unauthorized access or destruction”1; this includes but is not limited to installations such as Air Force Bases worldwide2; Naval Weapons Station Fort Worth3; Fort Carson4; White Sands Missile Range5; Ft Knox6; Waco7; etc8-10. Additionally, active duty members are mobilized into units known as Brigade Combat Teams (BCTs)11-13 or Pattern 1 Infantry14-16 depending on their branch of service17-19). These mobilization plans have included temporary deployment into foreign countries20-22 while joint exercises take place 24/7 outside our borders23-25). mobilizations have also occurred during peacetime when no hostilities are reported 26). The National Guard has long been recognized as an essential tool for homeland security24-27 and disaster relief28-. In response to Hurricane Katrina recently September 2005 approximately 145,000 Guardsmen were activated29-. Nationwide mobilization was ordered following 9/11 terrorist attacks which saw participation by more than 350 battalions30-. After 9/11 many governors across America declared emergencies requiring state militaries 31-. The governors then requested that ANG brigades be activated332/. The first post office opened in 1909 and the population grew rapidly thanks to waves of immigrants coming through the area during this time period. In 1922, an oil well was drilled in central Duncan and soon after hordes of people began arriving looking for work. This led to rapid growth for the community as businesses sprang up all around it with names like “The Oil Field Capital of Oklahoma” being coined to describe it at this point. In 1945, when World War II ended, many soldiers came back home andtown sprung up full-blown as they looked for new homes. Businesses continued booming as people searched for ways to support their families while they awaited news of war-related casualties overseas. This led to another wave of immigrants moving into town starting in 1951 which continues today as there are still so many people from different parts of the world living hereabouts! Today, Duncan is a vibrant community with plenty going on both locally and nationally due largely to its manufacturing plant companies that have left an impact on local economies throughout generations! There are plenty of cultural events happening every year such as arts festivals or Oklahoman ArtDays which celebrates artistry from all around town!
In 1907, Duncan was the site of a livestock auction that yielded over 1,500 head of beef. The first post office in Duncan was established in 1912. In 1917, the Oklahoma Territorial Legislature designated Duncan as the county seat of Haskell County. The population of Duncan grew steadily from its early days until World War II when it plummeted to a low point due to the combat actions in Europe. Since then, the population has gradually Cathedralized and continues to grow rapidly with new businesses and residences popping up all around town. The most recent development is the construction of the nearby University of Central Oklahoma which is now adding jobs and growth to what once was a struggling town
