Duncan is a small town in Oklahoma, located on the edge of the Animas River. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census. Duncan is one of four towns in Lincoln County and it has been part of the same community since 1887. It is named after General Duncan who fought in World War I and II. The first settlers arrived in what is now Duncan in 1887. The town was founded by J.D. Howes who also donated land for a courthouse and schoolhouse. The first post office opened in 1888 and remained open until 1907. A mill was built near the present day town center in 1912 and it continued to be used until 1974 when it was sold to an agricultural company. In 1916, local men formed the Duncan High School football team which played its first game against Woodward High School before disbanding due to lack of players. In 1924, another high school called Chatman Intermediate School (later Chatman Middle School) opened but closed within a year because of financial difficulties.. In 1931, two churches – Methodist and Presbyterian – merged into one church which renamed itself First Baptist Church as Duncan began to grow around this time.. The first telephone line was laid down in 1932 with service beginning on October 2nd that year! In 1951, oil drilling commenced outside of town limits resulting in some property damage including a wellsite fire that caused $10,000 worth of damage! That same year saw the opening of Oklahoma State Highway No 38 which connected Duncan with Tulsa along today's US-77 corridor! By 1960, there were only three residents living within the boundaries of today's village while over 100 people lived on adjacent farms! In 1969, Eastern Kansas Electric Cooperative became operational providing power for all businesses within our community!! Businesses included grocery stores/markets downtown as well as 3 convenience stores off SR #9 south across from city hall!! With this new source of power came new infrastructure such as water main construction that started up Main Street just east side from current day library!!! There alsoportedlyructionwhichstartedupMainStreetjusteastsidefromcurrentdaylibrary!!! On November 12th 1970 during a severe thunderstorm cellar doors at First Baptist Churchwereblown outandanelectricpolewaspitchedintothe groundneartheChurch!!!!Therewereno injuriesbutthechurchwasdestroyed!!!!!!!!!!!!!Thisstemmedoutthesmallestfaultinthecommunitynearlythesettimeofourlargeststorminmanyyears!!!!
