Since the early 1900s, Duncan, Oklahoma has been a center of coffee production. Today the town is home to two of the largest roasters in the country, Botha Coffee and Dutch Bros. Roastery. In addition to its namesake grocery store and local cafes, Duncan is also home to several large-scale roasting plants that produce both espresso and decaf coffee. The history of Duncan's coffee industry can be traced back to when farmers in rural Duncan began growing beans for their own consumption and export. By 1920, Duncan had become an important node in the international coffee trade thanks to its location on the Arkansas River between Dallas and Wichita Falls. The first large-scale roasting plant was built in Duncan in 1926 by Dutch Bros., which became one of America's leading coffee companies. During World War II, Dutch Bros.' plant produced millions of pounds of roasted beans for military use. After the war ended, Dutch Bros.' plant continued operations until it closed in 1967 due to technological advances and changes in global coffee prices. Coffee first came to Duncan, Oklahoma in the early 1920s. A Dutchman named Johannes van Roest founded a small coffee shop on West Main Street. The first cup of coffee was roasted by him and served to customers free of charge. In the 1940s, an American named Harry Dickinson opened a grocery store on Elm and John Streets. He started selling coffee from his store and began to popularize the drink in town. In the 1950s, another American named Forrest Jarrell bought the store and opened a café called 'The Forrest' at 304 Main Street. Coffee became popular at The Forrest and people started traveling from all over for their morning fix of fresh roasted coffee. In the 1960s, a man named George Price opened a restaurant called The Grapes at 350 Elm Street. It was the first Starbucks location in Duncan and it became known as THE CUP OF COFFEE FOR EVERYBODY!
Duncan is a small town in Oklahoma. It was founded in 1907 and has had a population of about 1,500 people since then. Duncan is located on the Arkansas River, about 40 miles northeast of Tulsa. The town was named for General John A. Duncan, who fought in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. In 1925, Duncan became the first city in Oklahoma to be incorporated as a municipality. The city ordinance allowed for two types of government: an elected mayor and a board of trustees that consisted of five residents from each ward. In 1959, Duncan became the only Oklahoma City suburb to be annexed by its larger neighbor when Tulsa annexed all of north central Oklahoma City's suburbs. The economy of Duncan is based largely on agriculture and manufacturing. The town has two schools: one public and one private; three churches; two banks; four businesses; and one hospital. Most notable products from Duncan are those made from corn oil or soybean meal used by farmers across the state; machine tools such as teletypes or typewriters; automobiles manufactured at local plants including Dodge Brothers Manufacturing Company (now known as Chrysler Group) during World War II and 1949-1951; along with some locally produced items such as cowboy hats or saddles
