Duncan is a small town in Oklahoma, located about 25 miles north of the state's capital, Oklahoma City. The population was 5,461 at the 2010 census. Duncan is home to the Duncan Independent School District and is one of two towns in Oklahoma that are both rural school districts. The first inhabitants of what is now Duncan were Native Americans who lived near the confluence of the Arkansas and Canadian rivers. A referendum was held on November 3rd, 1865 to ratify annexation; despite being 9% margin wide (out of nearly 300 votes cast), it passed with all but 4 residents voting against it. Oklahoma City began growing rapidly after its incorporation as a city in 1907; by 1920 there were over 1,000 businesses operating in downtown Oklahoma City alone. However, growth did not continue into the 21st century due to several factors including oil Busts and political instability throughout much of Central America during World War II which caused demand for goods produced there to drop significantly; also contributing were technological advances which made production processes more efficient elsewhere while leaving Duncan largely unaffected until recently when automobiles became popular here again among retirees seeking lifestyles similar to those enjoyed decades ago outside central OKC
