When the United States Air Force deployed in Duncan, Oklahoma during World War II, it brought with it a new era of airpower. The unit that would become known as the 7th Fighter Squadron was activated on December 15, 1941 and served untilactivated on September 9, 1945. The squadron's history goes back even further to 1942. On October 3rd, the 7th FS flew its first combat mission over Japan when they helped escort bombers from bases in China to their targets. This type of mission was often difficult because of the high altitude and tight turn radius required for success. In addition to providing support for bombers, the squadron also escorted fighters off Japanese coastlines. The 7th FS spent much time flying missions against Germany during 1943-1945 and conducted numerous sweeps across occupied Europe; however, their most famed engagement occurred on May 12th 1944 when they intercepted a large number of German planes operating out of Cologne while attacking Allied positions ashore. The plane that they downed was later determined to have been Hitler's personal plane and is still commemorated by the USAF as one of its most successful airstrikes during World War II. After the war ended, members of the squadron were stationed at various points around the world before being reactivated at Maxwell AFB in Alabama on May 1st 1948 as part of Project Blue Book which aimed to keep track of Soviet bombers traveling near US airspace. The squadron remained inactive until February 1951 when it moved its operations from Maxwell AFB to Goodsprings Air Force Base outside Phoenix Arizona under Project MACRON (later known as Operation Northwoods). From Goodsprings AFB, they provided protection for Clark AFB in Southern California until July 1954 when they transferred again – this time toedge Panama City Beach where they remained until September 1958 when they relocated once again – this time to Hickam AFB Hawaii where they remain today as part of Operation Diamondback! Duncan is a small town located in Tulsa County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 3,034 at the 2010 census. Duncan is an agricultural community and produces corn, wheat, soybeans, cattle, pigs, and chickens. Duncan also has a few businesses that provide services to the local community such as gas stations and churches. The Duncan School District serves the town with six schools: one public school and five private schools. The first settlers in what is now Duncan were farmers who came from eastern Kansas in 1881. A post office was established in Duncan on September 12 of that year. At the time it was known as "Fayetteville". In 1907 the name of the town was changed to "Duncan" after Major General Edmund Custer who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as governor of Oklahoma Territory before becoming general during World War I. The post office closed on October 15th of that year due to insufficient mail volume. In 1915 when Tulsa County was created it included much of east Tulsa including parts of present day Duncan including what is now downtown. When Tulsa County became part of Oklahoma Statehood on August 29th 1907 its boundaries were unchanged by statehood so most everything east of Tuttle Rd (now US 83) ended up inside OKC city limits which includes much of what is today named Duncan including some part that currently forms part of Tulsa University's campus
