Del City is a small town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. It was founded by the Mormons in 1867. The first post office was established in 1870. The population of Del City was 477 at the 2000 census. The Mormon congregation that founded Del City moved to what is now Phoenix, Arizona in 1879 and abandoned their community there shortly after because of political problems with the LDS church's leadership there. In 1886, a group of farmers from nearby Reno laid out a town site on the east side of present-day Muskogee County for themselves and named it "Del City". They developed it into an agricultural center and sawed logs to build homes until railroads arrived and replaced those methods in the early 20th century. In 1907, the Oklahoma Legislature merged Muskogee County with Tulsa County to form new government under territorial governorship of David Boren; however, no action was taken on plans to move Del City to Tulsa so as not to split Muskogee County too narrowly between two jurisdictions. In 1915, an act was passed by Congress creating Tulsa Municipal District No. 5 which included all present-day Tulsa counties as well as Osage Territory west of Canadian River (now part of Wichita County) and parts of Kiowa and Haskell Counties north thereof; this created separate government for these areas outside the direct jurisdiction of territorial governor David Boren and his cabinet members. As a result, when Boren resigned due to election interference allegations in 1916 he was succeeded by John Denny who ordered that all civil services be conducted within Tulsa Municipal District No. 5 rather than through territorial governments which were then controlled by Democrats instead of Republicans; this order caused great resentment among Tulsans who felt they had been robbed politically by Denny's Democratic majority government while their own territory remained essentially unaffected. However, many residents still lived within Tulsa Municipal District No. 5 until its dissolution in 1959 when most areas were annexed intoOklahoma City metropolitan area including Del City proper (which had become an enclave within that district).
