The Claremore Air Force Base was founded on December 15, 1947 by the United States Air Force. The base has a population of over 16,000 people and is home to the Oklahoma Air National Guard's 142d Fighter Wing. The 162d Airlift Squadron is also stationed at the base. The base provides airlift for major events in the region such as the State Fair of Oklahoma and other fairs. The air force also provides other services such as providing security for area communities and conducting Search and Rescue missions. In 2007, Claremore AFB hosted a NATO Summit which attracted more than 50 countries from across Europe and North America.
