The first white men to enter what is now Choctaw County were Hugh Lawson and Jacob Evans in 1836. They named their new landclaim after General Andrew Jackson's Creek Nation (the name given to them by American Indians living on the lower Ohio River). In 1839, Colonel John Chivington founded Fort Gibson located between modern day Tulsa and Akwesasne Village on Chivington's Indian Territory west of present-day Oklahoma City. In 1840, when Indian Territory was divided into two parts, east of the Arkansas River and west of present-day Wichita Falls,choctaws living east of the river moved to newly designated East Cherokee Territory under US Army Major George Watts Fenton while those living west of the river continued their traditional hunting and fishing practices under Chief Osceola until US forces forced him to cede his lands in 1845; this area later became known as Choctaw territory outside Oklahoma. In 1861, during the Civil War, Union soldiers massacred more than 60 unarmed civilians near what is now Oklahoman University after discovering they had been gathering food for Confederate forces from local farmers; this event helped start one of America's most notorious civil rights riots later that year called "The Tulsa Race Riot". As a result of these events, Governor Sam Houston issued an Executive Order ordering all Native Americans withinOklahoma turned over to military occupation without any right to trial or appeal should they choose not to do so.
