Choctaw is a town in Choctaw County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Choctaw people were first known to live in what is now Choctaw County. They arrived there in 1819 as part of a so-called "trail of Tears" brought by General John Ross during the Indian Removal Act. The area that includes present day Choctaw County was part of the Creek Nation until ceded to the United States in 1907. The town began as a small trading post on Arkansas River where traders could sell goods they had gathered from around Southeast Oklahoma and Mexico. In 1892, W.E.B DuBois donated land for a military academy which would become Oklahoman Military Academy (OMA). OMA was renamed Oklahoma State University in 1963 and it still occupies that building today. Oklahoma State University became an all-white college when it merged with Oklahoma City Teachers College in 1965 to form Oklahoma State University – Tulsa (OSU-T). Black students started attending OSU-T through various actions such as boycotts and sit-ins; however, these protests ultimately failed and black students eventually began attending other white universities across the state including OU and KSU respectively. In 1969, OSU repealed its integration policy after multiple protests by black students who felt they were not receiving equal treatment under the university’s jurisdiction
