Choctaw, Oklahoma is a town in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. The Choctaw people are a Native American tribe that live in the area now occupied by the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. The first white European settlers arrived in 1868 and called their new village "Fort Gibson." In 1907, Fort Gibson was renamed Choctaw Bluff in honor of Choctaw Chief Hankowen. The town began as a small community near the present-day border of Stephens and Haskell Counties on the unincorporated range known as Big Creek Ranch. By 1912, however, only 350 people lived inchoctawtown; most had come from surrounding counties or were seasonal residents. Anticipating increased traffic on Big Creek Road during Prohibition period alcohol sales became an important part of the local economy. In 1921 the post office moved to what is now its current location and continued operation until it was discontinued in 1972 due to high postage rates mandated by then-new postal regulations. Incidentally, this same year saw one of choctawtown's earliest businesses - Texaco - open its first store inside what is now Wichita Park mall north of town

The Choctaw Nation was created on February 15, 1871, when the United States Congress ratified a treaty between the United States and the Chickasaw Nation. The treaty determined that all Chickasaw people living east of US-27 would be merged into the Seminole Tribe. By 1907, only about 8% of Choctaw remained in Oklahoma. In 1990, afterOklahoma passed a bill recognizing Cherokee as its own nation, most of the remaining Choctaw moved to Georgia or North Carolina. However, a small number remains in Oklahoma City and other rural areas. The Choctaws were among America’s original nations; they arrived from central Asia via canoe by way of what is now Texas about 4,000 years ago. They were eventually able to settle down and form their own village communities before coming toOklahoma about 1800 B.C., where they encountered western traders and encountered European diseases first before developing their own cultures and languages. The modern day Choctaws emerged as one of America’s successful tribes through hard work, entrepreneurialism, and military service during World War II; they played an important role throughout America’s struggle against Japan during that time period as well as being key players in post-war Reconstruction process which helped rebuild many African American families who had been destroyed by white supremacy during World War II (Shane). In 1900 only 2% of Choctaws still resided within present day OKLAHOMA CITY limits while less than 1% remained within present day TULSA limits (Wright). Settlers formed townships including Claremore (now Ada), Muskogee (now Lawton), McAlester (now Jenks), Norman (now Norman) & Shawnee City Limits around this time period while also annexing adjacent Indian Territory( Wright). These townships served primarily nonnative settlers with few native residents living within them due to relocation policies put into effect by territorial authorities following Indian reclamation efforts spearheaded by then Governor George Wickersham(Shane). Most natives relocated eastward towards eastern Creek villages until finally all but a handful remnant tribe born northward from traditional home territory self-depopulated within 100 years or so following white settlement across much of Indian Territory leading eventually to today's Cherokee Nation boundaries The removal from choice lands forced many Cherokees off their ancestral homelands centuries agoand has resultedin very high levelsof intertribal violence&separation even today."
