The USS Oklahoma (BB-36) was a World War II battleship that served in the United States Navy. She was laid down on 25 October 1944 by the Bethlehem Steel Company, Quincy, Massachusetts; launched on 11 November 1944; and commissioned on 18 December 1945 with Captain J.D.Grotz in command. The ship operated out of San Diego, California until she reached her first deployment to the Pacific Fleet in January 1946. After serving as flagship of Task Force 54 during the Okinawa campaign, she sailed for home via Pearl Harbor and arrived at Mare Island Naval Shipyard on 26 February 1946. There she underwent a yearlong modernization program which began on 1 September 1948 and ended on 15 May 1950. Following her completion of her modernization program, Oklahoma departed Mare Island for another deployment to the Far East where she served as flagship of Task Group 58.3 during the Korean War between July 1950 and August 1951. She returned to San Diego after conducting exercises off Los Angeles before sailing for Japan on 10 October 1951 in support of Operationennisurance。 Oklahoma made two more deployments to Japan before returning home late in 1953 having completed all but one of her original modifications including an enlarged forecastle and new superstructure aft of mainmast). On 6 May 1954Captain John Matson relieved Captain Grotz when Oklahoma relieved USS Nevada (BB-38) as flagship of Task Unit 53½ Coral Sea while Nevada conducted shakedown operations off Long Beach Boulevard Inlet California. On 9 October 1954Oklahoma collided with SS "Olympic" off Hawaii killing both crew members aboard Oklahoma and injuring over 50 people from both ships's crews ashore at Puʻuwākea beach next day also resulting some minor damage done to both ships however no loss or injury occurred shore side . This event is generally considered as one of the most disastrous collisions involving warships during World War II
