Until the late 1800s, Broken Arrow was a small town in Oklahoma. The town's first police officer was named Sam Post and he served from 1868 to 1879. In 1907, Broken Arrow formed its own department and the first Constable was named Harry A. Barker. From 1907 until 1916, the town had a Sheriff who served as acting Mayor when the Mayor couldn't be found or unavailable. In 1916, the town incorporated and its first Police Chief was named George Easley. From 1916 until 1941, Broken Arrow had its own City Council which met in the old Masonic Lodge on First Street. During World War II, Broken Arrow joined the military and became known as "The Town of Victory" because it helped win the war against Japan. After World War II ended, Broken Arrow reverted back to its original name of "Broken Arrow."In 1951, officers were transferred out of downtown to make way for a new high school which opened in 1951. This move left downtown vacant and law enforcement activities shifted to Third Street where they continue to operate today despite having their own police department since 1967!
