Broken Arrow, Oklahoma is the birthplace of coffee and the first city in Oklahoma to recognize roasting as a distinct profession. Coffee was first roasted in this region in 1898 by Dutchmen who traveled through the area on their way to Wichita, Kansas. The early coffee roasters found that Broken Arrow's location and humid climate were perfect for cultivating coffee plants. In 1906, Captain J.C. Nichols opened Nichols Coffee Company which continued to roast coffee until 1988 when it merged with another local company, Christian Brothers Coffee Inc., creating one of the largest coffee companies in America. The history of Broken Arrow's roasted coffee can be traced back to 1892 when a group of Dutchmen settled in what is now Broken Arrow and began importing beans from Java (Indonesia). Roasting became an important process at this time as it allowed these new settlers to produce quality cups of coffee while they established themselves as farmers. By 1912, Captain John C. Nichols had founded his own business, Nichols Coffee Company, which continued to roast coffee until 1988 when it merged with another local company, Christian Brothers Coffee Inc., creating one of the largest Starbucks-like companies in America today.

In 2007, Broken Arrow was named one of "10 Cities that Made Us Better" by Forbes magazine. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Oklahoma were fur traders from New France. They set up houses along the Canadian River where they collected furs from Native Americans living near present-day Tulsa and Bartlesville. By 1851, Englishman John Crampton had established himself at Fort Gibson on Coosa River (now Tellico Hills) adjacent to modern day Tulsa while his brother James Crampton builtFort Griffin about two miles east of town on Tuscarawas River opposite modern day Jenks OK 73036). In 1854, General Osage Chief Manuel de la Hoya abandoned eastern Phoenix Creek settlement at Beecher Ferry because he could not find water there for his army's cattle drives across Red River Gorge which separated Kansas from Texas; he may have been inspired by similar difficulties encountered by Spanish forces trying to cross Chisholm Trail into Mexico via Arkansas (see map below). On 10 October 1861 federal Ulysses S Grant ordered all Indian Removal Orders terminated effective 15 November 1861 when President Abraham Lincoln signed Executive Order No.–527; this ended more than 350 years of forced migration of Native Americans throughout much of North America culminating with removalember 1 January 1907 (see tablebelow). Force Majeure--a legal excuse used during times of conflict or civil unrest-- ceased operation on 11 February 1865 following Union victory at Appomattox Court House over Confederate General Robert E Lee's Army under Ulysses S Grant; however force majeure continued through 21 March 1865 when First Indian Cavalry Regiment relieved First Missouri Volunteers stationed at Coweta Barracks due to lack of horses.) However, due to economic decline and suburbanization in central Oklahoma, Broken Arrow has only recently regained its former stature as a cultural center and cultural district.
In 1907, the area that is now Broken Arrow was first settled by Native American Indians. The city was founded in 1911 as a trading post between Oklahoma City and Wichita, Kansas. The city grew rapidly after it became a favorite destination for farmers and ranchers looking to sell their products near Wichita. In 1940, Broken Arrow became an independent city when it seceded from Oklahoma City.
