The Green family had land east of the Arkansas River and decided to settled it in what is now Bethany. The first settlers were Mr. and Mrs. Cramer, who arrived in 1907. In 1918, the population of Bethany was just over 100 people; however, by 1924 it had grown to 413 residents. In that year, the Bethany Post Office was established and served the community until 1953 when it was replaced by the present day Bethany town hall building. The first school in Bethany was built in 1911 on a schoolhouse lot donated by Mr. Cramer. It operated for three years before being torn down because of lack of money to keep it open! The current elementary school (opened fall 2006) serves students from kindergarten through eighth grade; however, there has been talk about building a new high school since 2005 because of dwindling enrollment at local schools. The economy of Bethany has been mostly agricultural since its founding; however, manufacturing has also begun to take hold over recent decades with contributions from local companies like Flour Mill #2 and Tulsa-based Osage Mfg Co.; these businesses have helped contribute to reversing some of the Community's declines during tough economic times throughout most of the 2000s and 2010s alike! Today, many aspects which once made life difficult for families here - such as limited access to affordable housing or lack thereof - are no longer an issue thanks largely to advances made within our community during this time frame!
