The coffee industry in Bethany, Oklahoma began in the early 1920s when two farmers, George and Lula Hinton, started production of their own coffee. The town was founded on a small farm that grew beans for local tenants. By the 1930s, coffee production had grown to a point where it became an important part of the local economy. In 1938, Bethany became the first city in Oklahoma to issue its own municipal currency-the Coffee Currency-based on sales of coffee. This introduced new levels of competition into the market and helped spur development within the community. The following decade saw growth as various businesses opened up in Bethany. One such business was The Koffee Klatch which served as a popular spot for locals to meet and buy coffee from sellers outside of town. This type of business helped promote commerce within the community and contributed to its success over time. In 1950, The Koffee Klatch relocated to Tulsa after purchasing land there and continued serving quality cup of Joe until its closure in 1984. A similar story occurred with The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf which opened up shop in 1951 inside an old cotton gin near downtown Bethany. Over time, this store grew into one of the most successful independent coffee shops in Tulsa County and played an important role in developing overall economic growth within the area. In 1978, entrepreneur Rick Majerus set out to open his very first café inside what is now OKCupid headquarters (then known as KTUL). Majerus’ café quickly became popular among residents and locals alike for their delicious morning caffeine fix! Majerus’ café has since been closed but continues to be missed by many who frequented it during those days! AfterRick's death in 2007, his widow established Rick's Coffee House adjacent to her son's fried chicken restaurant across from Memorial Stadium (now home to OU Athletics) - providing fans with a unique chance to enjoy great java while also supporting local businesses!

As the first city in Oklahoma to legalize coffee, Bethany has a rich history of coffee culture. The city's first café, The Coffee House, opened in 1892 and was known for its high-quality beans and delicious espresso drinks. In 1933, the Bethany Coffee Company was founded as a local business by three friends who pooled their money to purchase a small shop on First Street. The company continued to serve great coffee until it closed in 1978.
When Bethany, Oklahoma was hit by a tornado on April 5, 2003, it was one of the deadliesttornadoes in United States history. At least 203 people were killed and more than 500 were injured. In spite of this disaster, Bethany has since become an all-time record holding city with a population of over 100,000. The city is located in Butler County near the Kansas state line and is named for Englishwoman Bessie Smith who donated land to the city in 1911. Bethany was founded as a settlement by Mormon settlers in 1881. The first post office in Bethany opened in 1884. In 1907, the town became part of Butler County when it was created from parts of Canadian County and Tecumseh Township. By 1920, Bethany had a population of 509 people and had two businesses: a grocery store and a millinery store. When the Little Rock tornado touched down near Bethany on May 28 that year, there were only three residents remaining within the town limits - all men working at local farms or ranching operations outside of town. One resident reported seeing “a great column” OF flurries fly out of the sky before he could leave his home; minutes later he returned to find nothing but destruction around him He estimated that almost half his property - including his barn - was destroyed including most of his crops which lay scattered across acres nearby The community quickly rebuilt after being FWDED BY A TORNADO The death toll from the Little Rock tornado reached 27 before dropping to 16 on July 3rd following completionof government safety measures On October 15th 1948 another EF5 tornado struck Tulsa killing 46 people & injuring 375 In 1957 another EF5 tornado touching down just northeastof downtown Oklahoma City caused extensive damage& loss totaling $14 million

In 1948, when Bethany became an unincorporated community within Tulsa County, Oklahoma, it reverted to its original name: Bethany.
