The Bethany Air Force Base was once home to the United States Air Force's 555th Bomb Wing. The wing was activated on 1 July 1942 and assigned to the Ninth Air Force. It became operational on 15 November 1942 under the command of First Lieutenant Colonel Alonzo L. Hinton, Jr. The wing flew its first mission against Brunswick, Germany on 18 December 1942. On 17 January 1943, it was redesignated as the 555th Bomb Group and attached to Ninth Air Force Headquarters at RAF Boulogne-sur-Mer in France. The group began combat operations over Occupied Europe in February 1943 and played a pivotal role in defeating Nazi Germany's Axis powers during World War II. Inactivated on 25 September 1945, the 555th Bomb Group remains an active unit with the USAF as part of its Strategic Forces Command. The 557th Bomb Squadron (Medium) activation at Bethany AFB occurred concurrently with that of the 555th BG on 7 October 1941 when both squadrons were equipped with P-40 Warhawks and assigned to Ninth AF based at El Paso TX for training fighter pilots replacements for Army Fighter Groups which had been disbanded since Pearl Harbor . At their activation they were also given new serial numbers: 9550 (557th BS) - 9552 (557th BG). On 10 December 1941, during World War II; Japan bombed Pearl Harbor ; America entered World War II "with open arms", providing military personnel from all walks of life including women who had served before in other conflicts such as Russia or China . A number of these servicemembers enlisted with bands playing patriotic songs like " God Bless America ". Many women found their way into combat serving as aircrews or engineers within American Bomber groups deployments throughout WWII Aircraft procurement began early in WW2 with Boeing planes being purchased by USAAF/ Ninth AF through multiple contracts starting with Boeing C-47 Skytrain purchase order No: 14 issued 3 May 1940 Boeing P-38 Lightning fighters were acquired soon after along side Curtiss F4U Corsair fighters and Lockheed P-38 Lightning dive bombers . These aircraft complimented Douglas DC3 heavy transports used by Fifth AF flying strategic bombing missions over German cities during this time period

The Bethany Air Force Base gift history begins in the late 1940s when the United States Air Force bought a small airstrip in Bethany, Oklahoma. The airbase was used as a training and storage center for new pilots and support personnel during World War II. In the early 1950s, the airbase was closed due to budget cuts and it reopened as a radar station in 1954. The base stayed open until 1987, when it was closed again due to budget cuts. During its time at the Bethany AFB, the United States Air Force gave out many gifts to civilians in town such as cars, appliances, furniture, TVs and other electronics. In 1954, the United States Military Academy at West Point made an agreement with The Soviet Union to exchange gifts including aircraft, missiles, and other equipment. This was followed by other deals such as exchanging military hardware between the United States and Great Britain during Operation Overlord (the Battle of Normandy). These transactions helped solidify America's relationship with its European allies and gave American soldiers an advantage in war against Axis forces. Throughout its history, the Air Force has played a significant role in world peacekeeping efforts both through donations and combat deployments. From providing air support for operations such asOperation Desert Storm to missions such as troops fighting in Afghanistan, the Air Force has always been there for those who need it most.

Bethany, Oklahoma is the smallest and most rural of theOklahoma City metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1907 by a group of farmers, businessmen, and government officials who were looking for a new home to settle after the move fromreek. A coal mine opened in 1909 and quickly became one of the largest employers in town. The population rapidly grew throughout World War I, as workers in nearby Tulsa went on strike to demand better wages. The city's growth continued during World War II as bombers from Tulsa flew over on their way to bomb Japan. After the war, Bethany experienced a rapid decline in population due to both migration and retirements among its original inhabitants. However, it has slowly regained some of its former population since 2000 when there was a wave of immigrants from Mexico and other Central American countries that came to work in the employ of local businesses. The history of Bethany began with settlers coming here specifically for coal mining purposes. By 1915, there were over 100 mines operating here – making it one of the most developed coalmining areas in Oklahoma at that time. However, this industry eventually died out because open-pit mining became more common thanks to advances in technology. In fact, when Coal River Power Plant began operations near present-day Bethany in 1968 it was one of only two large power plants operated outside Eastern Kentucky! Over time however, many small businesses have been closed down due to competition from more centralized energy sources like oil or gas drilling rather than coal mining/processing activities which have left Bethany relatively unchanged since then! Today much of the downtown business district is composed of small independent storekeepers – providing an interesting contrast to what used to be right next door!
In 1907, a group of settlers from Bethany, Oklahoma founded the town. The town was named in honor of General George Armstrong Custer, who was killed in action during the Mexican-American War. In 1915, Bethany became anofficial city and had its own police department.
