Oil production began in earnest at Bethany Pipes Basin onshore in 1949 and continued until 1982 when the field was closed down due to environmental problems. The fracking process used during that time destroyed local wetlands and caused extensive damage to infrastructure including pipelines and wells. Nevertheless, the town has since bounced back with several new businesses such as an arts center and a shopping mall.
