Bartlesville, Oklahoma is a city in OK, located in the Haskell County seat of Haskell. The population was 24,912 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Haskell County and the only city in Haskell County. It is part of the Tulsa Metro Area. The first settlers to Bartlesville were Methodist Episcopal missionaries who came from Texas in 1881. They named their town after General John Pemberton, an American general who had been captured by Mexican forces while leading a military expedition against them near San Antonio de Bexar, Tex., on September 9, 1847. Bexar was then under Mexican rule and Pemberton's capture signified American victory over Mexico's ambitions northward into Texas. The original town site became part of present-day Bartlesville when it was platted on December 12, 1881; the name "Bartlesville" may be derived from one or more pioneers' surnames (e.g., Baxter). In 1907, President William Howard Taft issued Executive Order No. 12923 which created Oklahoma Territory out of parts of Kansas and New Mexico Territories east of Boise River; as a result there were no towns within Oklahoma Territory with names starting with "B." On October 14, 1907 – less than two months after Taft's order – Bartlesville became official City of Bartlesville when it was annexed by Haskell County from New Mexico Territory following its passage through Congress as a joint resolution (HJ Res 7) on November 6th that year - making it the first county in OK to become incorporated via legislation rather than annexation alone. According to2010 US Census data: As per state laws at that time all cities in KS & NM were required to annex if they reached 10K population or more but due to some recent court rulings most just did so without any added legal process ie thru incorporation etc however 2 oklahoma cities did this thru annexation only 1 being yukon
