Ardmore is a small town in Noble County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 7,095 at the 2000 census. Ardmore is the county seat of Noble County. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The area around Ardmore has been used for cattle drives and other events since early settlers arrived in this region. In 1881, two men named James Ladd and John Allgood founded a post office in what is now Ardmore with mail service only to their own home settlement near present-day Jenks. In 1907, the post office was renamed Ardmore after John Aird, one of the incorporators of Noble County as well as its first sheriff. In 1916, when Tulsa Metropolitan District #2 was established, it included all of Noble County except for Ardmore; Consequently, when Tulsa re-established its jurisdiction over Noble County on January 1, 1917 (due to statehood), ArdMORE had become part of that new jurisdiction! In 1920–1921—the year before Oklahoma joined the Union—the Japanese Americans living along Coweta Creek were moved from their homes north of McAlester to an internment camp known as Topaz Hills due to anti-Japanese racism then still alive in America; however they were not removed from their homes until May 1942 when General Douglas MacArthur ordered them transferred westward into Indian Territory under orders from President Franklin D. Roosevelt (see WWII American civilians expelled from Japan). When the railroad reached that area, settlers started coming upriver from Kansas and Missouri to build railroads. By 1876, there were over twenty small settlements scattered throughout present-day Oklahoma. The town of Ardmore slowly grew into a bustling commercial center during the late 19th century. In 1916, it became the administrative center for all of western Oklahoma when Guthrie became the state capital. That year saw another growth spurt for Ardmore with businesses opening up such as a grocery store, bank, post office,and movie theater. In 1948, Ardmore joined neighboring Tulsa as one of four towns formed into OU's campus district administratively under directorate number 2 (the others being Jenks, Winterset and Altus). Over time various educational institutions have been opened within OU's campus district including: engineering school (1958), business school (1991), law school (2002), medical school (2003), and speech/language pathology program (2005). Today, OU's campus district administratively includes all but two counties within its borders: Tulsa County and Osage County located within McAlester city limits; this makes for an overall population size nearing 250K residents! The growth of education at OU has led to increased economic development downtown which has transformed into one ofArdmore's most vibrant neighborhoods featuring several high-end restaurants and nightlife venues as well as many locally owned businesses; this also helps support local jobs opportunities within the community!
