Altus is a small town in Oklahoma, located on the southern border of the state. The population was 5,601 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1881 by men from Kansas City, Missouri. The name Altus comes from an Indian word meaning "place where there are no trees." In 1910, Altus had a population of 2,951 and it grew to 7,853 by 2000. At that time, it was one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing towns. The post office at Altus opened in 1896 and remained open until 1976. The first store in Altus was a general store run by Tena Hinton and her husband J.W. McNaughty. They also raised chickens and hogs on their farm off US Highway 169 for meat until 1906 when they built a poultry house and market near what is now Main Street. That same year they added gasoline to the market mix when they began selling gasoline as well as hay, straws, flour, eggs and other goods from their store via truck or wagon to local farmers who would then bring them home with them for sale or storage before packaging them into crates for shipment to distant points east or west In 1907 Gertrude Snively established what became known as "the little grocery" on Main Street opposite the old post office which she operated until 1959 when she sold her business to Rhema Food Stores Incorporated which continued operations until 1977 when it merged with Kroger National Markets Incorporated forming America's second largest food retailer after Safeway plc
