Altus, Oklahoma is a small town in the US state of Oklahoma. The population was 3,514 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. Altus is bordered by Muskogee County to the east, Creek County to the west, and Canadian Creek to the north. The city began as a post office on July 1, 1879, and became an incorporated town on December 24 of that year. The name Altus was chosen because it lay about 12 miles (19 km) from Tulsa. At one time there were more than 50 businesses in Altus; however, many have since closed or been replaced by newer ones. The downtown core of Altus features severalhistoric buildings dating back to 1907 including the old Methodist church and fire station which are now used as museum exhibits. Other historic buildings include two blocks of three-story brick apartment buildings built in 1922-24 and originally used as Thunderbird Hotel/Motel & Racetrack complex until they were bought by developers in 2006 and renamed The Park Place Apartments; also a four-block section of downtown that dates back to 1902 with a single storey building called "The White House" which served as Judge John Wimer's headquarters during early years of town development before he moved away and abandoned it due to popular opposition. Today's economy revolves around manufacturing: agricultural products such as feed grains, soybeans, corn oilseed meal pellets, fertilizer pellets and other feedstuff for poultry; water treatment services; local real estate transactions such as homebuilders buying land for subdivisions or new housing developments adjacent to existing factories or shopping malls; trucking services related to fuel production at nearby refineries or exported oil products from Tulsa; among others. In 2016 local businesses generated $535 million worth of economic activity within its borders – making it one of America’s 25 fastest growing towns according to Forbes Magazine’s “Top 25 Towns That Are On The Rise” list!
