In the early 1900s, Altus was a thriving small town in Oklahoma. It grew out of the remains of two previous settlements, Altus and Haskell. The first batch of settlers arrived in 1885. By 1910, the population had grown to over 500 people. The town was initially named after Captain Samuel Haskell, an American military officer who fought in Mexico during the Mexican-American War and later became a delegate to Congress from Oklahoma Territory. In 1916, the name change was due to objections from a local Methodist congregation that felt it should be called "Albuquerque." However, this name change did not last long and by 1923 Altus had reverted back to its original name:Altus, Oklahoma (now part of Tulsa). The gold rush that followed on the frontier brought new life to Altus in 1892. Businesses such as laundry and grocery stores quickly sprang up around the fledgling community. By 1896, there were already several churches and schools in town. The boom continued through World War I and into Prohibition years; however, by 1925 Altus had completely stopped growing due to lack of resources and economic decline. In 1938, whenOklahoma statehood moved from territorial control into Indian Territory under US jurisdiction following World War II, much discussion took place about what would become of Altus given its unique history and location within Indian Territory rather than within Oklahoma proper - a move many felt would relegate it further down on the list ofOKlahoma's major cities/towns (such as Norman or Tulsa). Ultimately it didn't come to pass - although some buildings still remain inAltus today) - but because of its unusual history it has been included prominently throughout OKhistory textbooks ever since then (albeit without any formal recognition). Although mostly known for his work as director emeritus at Oral Roberts University's School of Journalism & Mass Communication (until his retirement in 2009), Drayson also spent time extensively researching Altus' archives for his OU History Master's thesis which he completed in 2001 (!), before finally publishing his dissertation entitled '"Altuse: A History Of One Small Town In Indian Territory"'. While those essays focus largely on historical events taking place outside the confines of Main Street here at home ('the Gold Rush Years',1892-1920 etc.), they do touch upon some interesting aspectsof local history too - such as how one altuse business became one of OKlahomans' most popular landmarks...
The Altus Gold Rush began in 1885 and lasted for two years. The Altus Mining District was located in northeast Oklahoma, just east of the city of Altus. It included a wide area that extended from the Arkansas River to the Canadian River. The gold rush started when prospectors found gold near the town of Altus on July 6, 1885. The first claim was filed by Wm. H. Caldwell on August 5, 1885. The rush ended in 1888 when all the available land had been claimed and there were no more mines to be discovered.
