The Altus Naval Shipyard was founded in 1912. It has been the home of the Oklahoma Navy ever since. The shipyard is a significant part of the history of the Altus community, and it has produced a wide variety of naval vessels, including submarines, frigates, cruisers, and destroyers. In addition to warships, the shipyard also manufactures missiles and other weapons for use by the navy. Most notably, the shipyard produced USS Oklahoma (BB-39), which served in World War II as part of the United States Navy. The aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CV-6) also originated from at Altus Naval Shipyard. Other notableansas include USS Wichita (CA-19), USS Midway (CV-8), USS Mayport (LPD-2), and USS Independence (DE-22). Additionally, there are three Landing Craft Mechanization Units(LCMUs) stationed at Altus Naval Shipyard that serve as amphibious assault vehicles and can transport up to seventy seven people or thirteen tons of cargo apiece.

Altus is a town in the U.S. state of Oklahoma, located on the eastern edge of the Wichita Mountains, about 31 miles (50 km) south of Tulsa and 97 miles (151 km) east of Oklahoma City. The population was 10,824 at the 2010 census.[1] Altus was founded by pioneer settlers in 1887 as an agricultural community near what is now Lawton. It became a small town when it was annexed by Tulsa in 1907. The name "Altus" comes from the Kiowa word "aluta," meaning "a watering place." The first post office in Altus opened on July 1, 1887. The name was changed to Altus on March 3, 1889; and to its current spelling on October 15, 1907. In 1907, Tulsa annexation created Altus as its own municipality with a population of 5,759 residents. The altustown area west of downtown Tulsa had been developed as a bedroom community for larger towns such as Tulsa and Lawton while smaller ones such as McAlester were left undeveloped. By 1959, only 2 percent of the total population lived within city limits while almost all inhabitants lived outside the boundaries of Tulsa proper;[2] this situation eventually changed with annexations throughout that decade or so leading to increased suburban growth around downtown Tulsa and other parts of downtown OKC which again closed off much rural space into whichOKC had annexed during this time period
