Altus is a small town in Oklahoma, located about 120 miles northeast of Tulsa. The population of the town was 3,451 at the 2000 census. The first settler in what is now Altus was John Wesley Morgenstern in 1881. He came from Germany and named his farm "Morgenstern." In 1907, Harry C. Denton bought the farm from Morgenstern and it became known as Denton Farms until 1935 when it changed hands again, this time to J.D. Payne who renamed it Altus Farms after his father's home state of Oklahoma. Altus has had a few name changes over the years too - first called "Harrison" then "Odom" then finally "Altus" in 1925 when Pte Wm Hargrave took over running the post office here which he had operated since 1913. The present day Altus name originated with pioneer Sallie Mae Nolen who arrived in 1889 and named her place "New Ulm," after her native country of Holland. She moved to Altus in 1905 and started a general store here that still stands today - New Ulm General Store #2 (now closed). In addition to its general store, Nolen also operated a schoolhouse here for several years before closing down in 1916 due to budget restrictions within the local government at that point. However, Nolen's grandson, Abe Herron continued to operate New Ulm School until 1951 when it burned down during an unrelated storm! Ironically enough, Abe Herron would later become president of Tulsa-based Western Electric Company! Another early resident of Altus was James Aitken who settled there around 1895 along with his wife Emaline and their two children - Jameshorn Aitken and Edith Augusta Aitken (later spelled Askew). These pioneers were among the first farmers west of the Arkansas River to grow crops successfully on what is now known as Oklahoma Territory! When they left their land behind they brought with them all sorts of tools including plows, seeders and hoes! After some pioneering work by local farmers elsewhere on Indian Territory (in areas such as Lawton) Aitken's family eventually moved back eastward into Indian Territory where they began sheep farming operations near Tahlequah beginning in 1903-04 under license from Ulysses S Grant himself!

In 1946, Altus voters passed an ordinance authorizing fluoridation of water supplies which helped makeAltus one of the most fluoride-free cities in America. By 1960, however, Altus had lost much of its economic vitality and its population had decreased to around 100 people. However, since then, it has slowly regained some of its former prominence as a small town with a rich history.
The first white American to live in Altus, Oklahoma was George Armstrong Custer. He came to the area in 1879 and started a ranch. The town of Altus was founded in 1907 by settlers from Kansas City.
