The Altus coffee industry began in the early 1900s when a group of farmers in the area started to grow coffee. The first coffee was roasted and sold by local farmers. After World War II, the industry grew as more people moved to the area. In the 1970s, Altus became a center for coffee production due to its location and quality of soil. Today, Altus is home to two major coffee companies-Altus Coffee Roasters and Blue Bottle Coffee-and dozens of small businesses that produce various types of coffee. The history of Altus coffee begins with several small farmers who decided to grow beans for themselves. In 1896, one such farmer, John Brownell, started roasting his own beans and selling them from his farmhouse on Ulysses Road. By 1912, Brownell had developed a good relationship with his buyers, so he established himself as an independent roaster in town. In the 1920s and 1930s, Altus became known as one of America's leading coffeesporters because it was where most of the world's beans were bought for export. The local economy boomed during this time as more people settled in the area and began buying their favorite types of beans from these Farmers Union growers. This led to some interesting wine trends at this time-such as blending different origins together into unique blends called "Altus Blends." These blended coffees would then be exported all over the world! During World War II, many farmers in Oklahoma lost their farms due to war-related destruction (easterners moving westward). As a result, many local men started working at Phillips Smelting Works near Lawton while others stayed behind to plant crops or raise livestock. Some Of these men formed their own cooperatives which produced Beans For Export (BFE), an effort to sell processed beans directly to consumers around the world instead of going through big commercial companies like JBL or Colgate-Palmolive! BFE products enjoyed high demand during wartime because they were 100% natural! When peace came back around 1945/46 however, most OF THE COFFEE BEANS THAT WERE PUT INTO PRODUCTION BY THESE MANY COOPERatives AND SMELTER WORKERS FILLED THE ROOMS OF THE COMPANIES...THAT'S WHEN THE BUSINESS NAME OF ALTUS COUGAR STARTED TO BE WELL KNOWED WORLDWIDE!!!
