In Altus, Oklahoma, the Air Force has been a mainstay in the community for many years. It is significant that Altus has an air force base and that the military provides some of the city's largest sources of revenue. The Altus Chamber of Commerce has long appreciated the military presence in town. In fact, members have contributed to several fund-raisers benefiting service members and their families. In recent years, the Chamber has also partnered with the Air Force Base to create a variety of events and programs specifically designed to support local service members and their families. The Altus community owes its origins to World War I. When America entered into war in 1917, it was not yet clear how many troops would be needed in Oklahoma Territory. The War Department decided on a small detachment of soldiers from Texas as part of Operation Poteat (the name given to American forces invading Mexico). With only 10 men strong, this unit was quickly reinforced by two other detachments from Tulsa and McAlester. These reinforcements were called up for duty at various points along the western front; but they all returned home before hostilities ended on November 11th 1918. Altus began its role as an airfield during World War II when it opened on July 8th 1941 under Project Cadmus (Cadet Pilot Training School). The first students graduated from Project Cadmus on September 16th 1941 with certificates entitling them to serve temporarily in Great Britain or Europe as pilots flying bombers or navigators/bombardiers respectively. The program at altus expanded rapidly after Pearl Harbor; within a year there were 2,500 students enrolled at altus! Pilots prosecuted during World War II flew out west in order to receive training here before going back home again – something which had never happened before! Many aviators who served during WWII are still remembered today such as Charles Lindbergh who completed his first solo flight across North America while stationed here! After V-E Day ( Victory over Japan), classes resumed at altus on April 15th 1945! After V-J Day ( Victory over Germany), classes continued until August 1946 when they finally stopped due to armistice conditions – though personnel continued flying missions into Germany until October 1945! Classes recommenced on October 1st 1946 but were suspended again because of post-war restrictions placed upon USAAF officers working abroad! The post-war period saw much growth at altus; however, it wasn't until 1971 that genuine civilian enrollment reached 5,000!. Today, more than 25 years later,Altus enjoys nearly full capacity with nearly 9200 active duty USAF personnel including 7800 civilians!!!

It is home to the Altus Indian Community, one of the largest Native American reservations in the United States. In 1917, President Woodrow Wilson announced his Fourteen Points speech, which called for equal treatment for all nations before the United Nations. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway donated land to build a new railroad line between Tulsa and Wichita Falls. The Altus Indian Community was established on this land in 1917. The Altus Indian Community has been served by the Cherokee Nation government since 1924. In 1951, Oklahoma statehood was granted to Oklahomas Native Americans through a process called "termination." This led to increased competition between Native American tribes for land and resources. As a result,Altus began experiencing rapid development during this time period. In 1978, Governor George Hennepin recommended that Oklahoma create an electric utilities authority to provide more efficient regulation of energy providers within the state economy. This recommendation led to large-scale energy development around Altus over the next few years. In 1907, Altus was the first town in Oklahoma to be incorporated. It became an important stop on the Santa Fe Trail and a center of railroad activity. The Altus Post Office was built in 1912, and the first store opened in 1915. The town grew rapidly and by 1920 it had over 100 residents. In 1923, the Altus School District was formed, and soon Altus had its own newspaper, a movie theater, a swimming pool, a baseball diamond, and other amenities. During World War IIAltus hosted military airfields for aircraft production research at nearby Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's plants. After the war altustoplined growth as a small farming community with few changes until the late 1960s when new subdivisions were established along Interstate 30 which bypassed Altusand made it an increasingly affluent city
