Altus, Oklahoma is a city in Comanche County, Oklahoma, United States. It was founded in 1881 by John S. Blair and named for his father, Altus Blair. The population was 9,403 at the 2010 census. The town of Altus first emerged as an agricultural center due to its location on the Arkansas River floodplain and its access to irrigation water from the river. The original settlers were mostly Germans who had come westward during the early years of the American Revolution. By 1840, many of these same Germans had also relocated to what is now Altus because they found good land thereabouts. In 1881, John S. Blair platted and named his new town for his father-in-law James Witherspoon (1785–1857), an officer with militia forces in Kansas during the Mexican War and later a member of the Texas House of Representatives from Lubbock County (now Dallas County). In 1907, when territorialOklahoma was created following the end of Native American Wars between Mexico and America, Altus became its capital under Territorygovernment officials Thomas Fenton Keyes (1851–1926) and Harry Johnston Morrison (1856–1929). The move from Dodge City followed several years of planning that began withKeyes' arrival in 1907 as executive secretary for Indian Affairs under Territorial Governor Alfred IversonDodge City's mayor George Harklessand quickly demonstrated that it could not hold up to more than one city per district within boundaries prescribed by Congress. A second attempt at relocation occurred in 1912 when Territory Governor Charles Goodlett Devine transferred all but 1/5thsofthe civilianpopulation of Tulsa to altus so that it could form a new nucleus around which other towns would develop; however this failed because too few people wanted to leave their homes after becoming part of Tulsa's "new town". The post office at Altus opened on November 12, 1911; it replaced an earlier post office established in 1905 by Jeptha Meeks Deane (1854–1920). At first mail delivery was via horseback or wagons carrying sacks filled with about two bushels each weight mail plus expenses; over time Pony Express service improved until electric mail delivery became available; however some citizens still used horses or mules for letters sent east until 1925 when electrified postal cars arrived from Wichita Falls TX . In 1916 Anthon Beattie organized what would become known as "The Soil Conservation Society" which purchased 4 acres near present day Civic Center where they built a small frame building called "Beattie Hall." This organization later renamed itself "American Land Trust" after acquiring additional property near Pryor next door then moving into their current building on Central Avenue in 1926 On May 2nd 1915 a tornado struck Altus killing 5 people including 2 women age 16 & pregnant Mrs Sarah Ewing aged 43 & 3 children aged 7 thru 11 months old Colleen McBride age 8 days old & Store Manager John Bigham age 53 both residents being alone out walking their dog across street from store! No injuries reported anywhere else within 100 miles! Postal workers stopped all mail Delivery while sheltering inside buildings! This severe weather event has been called one Of The Greatest Tornadoes In History!!! Many people still talk about how bad things looked outside even though no damage was done
The area now known as Altus, Oklahoma was first settled by the Kiowa and Comanche peoples in the 18th century. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Altus County, Oklahoma, in 1881. A post office called Altus was established in 1888, and the county was named for Colonel John F. Altus, a U.S. Army officer who served in Mexico during the Mexican-American War. In 1907, Altus County became one of four counties west of Texas that were created to serve areas north of Tulsa City limits. The county court house and jail were built at what is nowAltus Community College. In 1911, the Oklahoma Legislature designatedAltus as the site of an Agricultural Experiment Station to be conducted by the state government underthe direction of Agriculture Secretary George Catlett. By 1928, however, the Agricultural Experiment Station had been disbanded and most of its resources had been transferred to other agencies.
