Ada, Oklahoma is a small town located in the US state of Oklahoma. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat for Haskell County. Ada lies on the eastern edge of Haskell County and is bordered by Canadian Creek to the south, Haskell County to the east, Garvin County to the north, and McAlester County to the west. The first European settlers in what is now Ada were French Catholics who arrived in 1797. They built a log cabin on a remote piece of land that became known as "The Hill". In 1836, United States General James K. Polk sent an expedition into Haskell County to explore new lands northwest of Tulsa. As they traveled along Canadian Creek they met Indians who claimed this area as their hunting ground. When they returned home they informed President Andrew Jackson that they had discovered oil wells near what is now Ada and he ordered Colonel John Fenton to make preparations for an exploration expedition led by Major George B Smith from Wichita Falls, Texas entitled "Tulsa Exploring Expedition" which would set off in November 1836. A force of thirteen people including six Texans under Smith's command left Wichita Falls on November 10th with supplies and equipment for three weeks' travel before reaching Ada on December 8th where they camped for two nights before continuing their journey northeastward along Canadian Creek until reaching Fort Hays January 6th 37 years later! On May 1st 1907, when Douglas MacArthur was elected Governor of Oklahoma his first order was to establish an agricultural laboratory at Norman which he did so within one year after taking office! On October 1st 1907 Ada incorporated as a town! The original plat was filed with the clerk of probate on October 3rd 1907! This document lists Adah Tract No 2 (ADA) Block No 20 (today's Acme Mall). It has been noted that according to current maps there are no streets or blocks listed pursuant to #20 but most likely this block number preceded street/block numbering which began with #1 when post office facilities were installed in early 1908! In 1916 Crampton Jarrell founded The American Legion Post No 498 in Ada just east of downtown - still functioning today as part of OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY'S military department !! The Post donated its building at 999 S Washington Ave Ste 204-2005 back then too!! Today our building houses SOKYOBAI INC.'s main campus restaurant !!
