Ada is located about 137 miles (250 kilometers) north of Tulsa and about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Mayes. The town was founded in 1892 by George H. Sweet as a stop on the Durant, Oklahoma & Gulf Railway. It became a community after it was designated as an act of Congress in 1907 to commemorate the centennial of the United States Constitution. In 1912, Ada became one of three towns in Indian Territory that were organized into a city when that territory was made intoOklahoma Territory following its acquisition by the US government. In 1957, Ada became one of five cities in Indian Territory that were consolidated with Tulsa to form Tulsa County. The city's growth continued until 1990 when it lost its status as an incorporated municipality and reverted to being a unincorporated village within Tulsa County. Today, Ada remains an important center for rural Oklahomans who live near or along its borders with Canadian and Texas counties as well as with several nearby rural villages. Ada, Oklahoma is a small town in the Arkansas River Valley located about 25 miles south of Tulsa on Interstate 44. The population was 1,813 at the 2000 census and 2,047 at the 2010 census. Ada is the county seat of Caddo County. The community of Ada was founded in 1892 by J.M. Stephenson as a post office called "Poplar Springs." It became a town in 1907 when it incorporated as a city. In 1911, Ada annexed the cities of Muskogee and Jenks to become one municipality with a population of 362 people. The city of Ada merged with the city of Jenks to form the current municipality on January 1, 2013. In 1914, Ada established its own high school which graduated its first class that year and later awarded its first diploma to Harry Truman in 1948. The university opened in 1950 as Oklahoma State University-Edison and later changed its name to Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City; it was renamed again to Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City in 1973 after statehood passed through Oklahoma Territory into new hands following the Ulysses S. Grant Administration's Executive Order No. 923 establishing statehood for all Native American reservations within Kansas and Nebraska due to congressional disapproval of their inclusion within those states under federal jurisdiction until then (the order also exempted Native Americans living on Crow Nation Reservation within Anadarko Indian Village east of Lake Wichita from this). In 1978–79, OSU-Oklahoma City won an NCAA championship game against UCLA Bruins football team played at Griffith Stadium on October 14th/15th (the day before statehood) before 50,000 fans who had come from all over eastern OKC for that game only served as observers instead of partakers because NCAA rules forbade schools outside OFA from sponsoring championships events during that time period while still being considered members OFA (this rule change allowed previously ineligible schools such as Doane College now formerly Oklahoman Stroudsburg College now Eastern Washington University to join OSU)). Upon winning their third championship ring consecutively in 1981–82 concurrent with joining Ohio Valley Conference membership which made them conference champions for single season for the first time ever they vacated Griffith Stadium field house and moved back home court across campus where they currently reside today against archrival UNLV Rebels (also attending OU) having last hosted such an event back in 2016 prior to moving upstate).
