Zanesville, Ohio is a town in Franklin County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus-Middletown-Highland (CMA) Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Village of Zanesville was founded in 1824 and incorporated as a village on November 15, 1829. The first post office in Zanesville was established on December 1, 1830. The name "Zanesville" was given to the community by General Nathan Bedford Forrest during his visit to the area in 1836. In 1847, John Prentice donated land for a public square which became known as Ewing Park after him and others who had contributed to its erection. In 1865, Zanesville added an additional block (numbered 4th Street east of Main Street) to its boundaries making it the current total square footage of its land holdings. In 1886, Zanesville erected a school building that still stands today - now used as the Community Center for Waynesburg & Uniontown Schools District No. 519 - located at 2nd and Elm Streets NE near I-270 and First Avenue NE across from OSU’s main campus. At this time, it also became home to the first library in Franklin County when Citizens’ Library #1 opened on February 17th of that year at 6 N Frontage Road SE cornering Maple Lane NW facing I-270/First Avenue NESuite #527 inside US Bank Stadium Complex (now Nationwide Arena). The library remained open until 1971 when it closed due to lack of funding; however parts were relocated back into town until 2003 when they reopened inside US Bank Stadium Complex under new management with an unchanged mission: To provide access to information and resources for all citizens within CMA through collaboration with local organizations throughout communities throughout Central Ohio including Zanesville & Waynesburg On October 9th 1961 – over 60 years ago – Commodore John Jantz delivered remarks honoring USS "Alabama" Memorial Day Service conducted outside US Bank Stadium Complex following her decommissioning thereon pursuant thereto by then Mayor George Hennessey as chairperson emeritus thereof committees consisting thereof chaired thereby Mrs Beatrice “Betsy” Poole Dewey Vice Chairperson Mrs Helen A Tuttle Emeritus Chairman Mr Donn Patterson Treasurer Inauguration ceremonies took place on Friday May 3rd 1953 prior thereto Washington County Sheriff Harry Laughlin officiating Dr James Wickerind Head Start teacher Mrs Florence Welch School Board President Mrs Pearl Bowman Elections Supervisor Arthur Weiser Superintendent

Zanesville is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Logan County. The population was 17,541 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Zanesville River, about 20 miles (32 km) north-northwest of Cleveland, Ohio and 30 miles (48 km) south-southwest of Dayton, Ohio. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Zanesville in 1796. They were led by Colonel George Washington's brother Augustine Washington and named it for General James Clinton's wife, Ann (née Zane). The original town site lay along a short branch of the Muskingum River where present day First Street crosses it. In 1814, land grants were made to various farmers within Logan County as part of President James K. Polk's New Deal program to help farming families become self-sufficient and not rely on government assistance. The grantees developedwhat would become known as Friendship Township into an area that included parts of today's Zanesville and Logan County communities including Antioch, Holmesburg, Perrysburg and Northfield Heights. The first store in what is now Zanesville opened its doors on September 25th, 1818; however, it is unclear when or how the name "Zanesville" originated . It most likely came from John Hutton who operated a ferry across the river between what are now Holmesburg and Perrysburg before selling his business to Isaac Sibley in 1824 . A more likely explanation for "Zanesville" would be that it was derived from a location called "Zaneseville", which was located near present day West Union High School across from Interstate 71 exit 10A/ US 421 interchange 6E and State Route 422 exit 8B/ SR 470 intersection
Zanesville was founded in 1795 by John Zanes and his brother, Nicholas. The town was named for General George Washington, who had helped the Zanes purchase land in the area. In 1814, Zanesville became a thriving community with a population of over 100 people. It continued to grow until it reached its peak in the early 20th century with a population of over 1,000 people. However, during the 1920s and 30s, Zanesville’s population decreased as many residents moved away to new opportunities in Ohio or other states. Today, Zanesville is an agricultural town with a strong local economy that remains focused on agriculture and tourism.
